Failed out my ADN on the last exam

Published

OK question...I failed my last exam and consequently failed out of my ADN program. I am heart broken, the highest grade was a 78 for the entire school. I already had a job lined up which now won't happen. My school said i should appeal, but appeal what? I went in to this exam I thought fully prepared. If I am not permitted to retake this last semester, I am out finished and will need to repeat the entire 2 year program if I want to continue. I really need to work after all this. Is is possible to take the NCLEX for LPN's and possibly pass it with the knowledge I have acquired in my ADN program? I'm not sure if that is allowed without taking an actual LPN program but really I have taken all the requirements I've read that are necessary. Any insight would be helpful.

missy..I certainly wish that were the case., but not in this state. nYou must take a lpn program in order to sit for the exam. If I could have I would have done that while still in school and worked as a lpn rather than a cna. Here you can get your cna certification but thats it. So now I am working as a cna at a ltac hospital until I can save $$ and go to a lpn program. I actually dislike this job very much, everything I learned not to do in nursing school they do. Well not everything but I've found syringes caps in the beds, patients dirty, nurses not answering alarms etc. They laugh at me because I want to do wants right and they say well we know that machine doesn't work right and it goes off all the time, but what if that 1 time its real? I don't think I will stay at this place though it has some hidden benefits like its 10 min from my home. We shall see I've put out some resumes to do anything can or any type work in hospitals until I can get back to school.

I also did not pass in the ADN program and unfortunately that happens to the best of us. I don't necessarily feel like a failure, because I know how hard it is. I was able to transfer over to the LPN program in October and skip out of two of the classes which is because its equivalent to what I had already done in the ADN program. Anyways, I did so much better in the LPN program and will be graduating in May. If I choose to go back and try for my RN later on, I will do a bridge program. This will give me the opportunity to work as an LPN for awhile for the knowledge and experience. Works for me <3

In our state you may sit for the pn/nclex after completing your second term of the ADN program, which is what I plan to do. The tech college that I attend has a PN program with a long waiting list. Our PN program also, only starts once a year in June.

I'm so sorry that you have gone through this experience, it's heartbreaking. In what state do you live? Are your credits transferable to other schools, perhaps a different LPN program? I really don't want this to prevent you from reaching your goal, even if the path is convoluted, I believe you will get there one way or another. I wish you the best.

I am exploring my options in taking a LPN program. In this state I cannot take another RN program for 5 years.

Specializes in LPN.

Hi. My daughter has been through 3 semesters of Adn and missed the required average by less than a point, both in her 2nd semester (which she had to retake the 2nd semeater), and then again in her 3rd semester. She cannot keep going on the RN track at that school, but could do LPN. She has been told about going to another state to take the Exam since she has actually taken 3 semesters of ADN. We live in Mississippi and our state won’t let her take the test to go ahead and get her LPN license. Do any of you have any advise on what she could do? And help would be great!!

Check with other states but don't be surprised if she can not do this. Each state sets their rules on this and even if the particular state allows it, if THE SCHOOL says no, then she is stuck. The school must cooperate and there are those that do not, no matter what the rule is in that particular state. I seriously doubt that her school would be willing to endorse her request to apply for LPN/LVN licensure in another state. She will probably have to start an LPN program from the start and complete said program.

Mel98 I'm late on commenting but we are have been in the same boat, daughter took all classes, passed all clinicals, then failed her final class exam which just put her under a passing grade by less then 2 points. Didn't get her appeal to retake the semester. After extensive checking would have to take another program in entirety to become a LPN at a additional cost of $23-29,000. Just don't have the funds to do this anymore. She still wants to go back to nursing especially wishing she could help during this pandemic but she makes so little money as has expenses now, which includes a big car loan. Already was hired by a hospital as she expected to pass her class. Had pictures done, paid for, had nursing pin ordered and paid for. Bought a decent car to travel to work..now the loan...now nothing, but a meager job in retail. Has a degree in environmental biology too. So she /and we has spent mega $$ on education.

and to boot...if today was her last semester they would have given her a pass grade (as she was passing), she would have never taken that last exam and would have had a try at the NCLEX, who even gives you more than one opportunity. Some times life just doesn't seem fair.
