Mainly just by student e-mail on the school website, sometimes on blackboard. I don't think it's right to communicate through facebook because not every student has a page. I think e-mail is fine.
Edit: Nevermind, I thought you asked how does your school communicate to you. I have no idea about other schools communicating with mine.
Our school uses both blackboard and facebook, I like facebook cause the reminders go directly to my phone, but I am on blackboard all the time cause of class, so its all there to see. Whatever, as long as I know what is going on, it is all good. I don't really use the school e-mail, cause it is such a pain to get into.

Ours is too, but with being on the computer so much, I just redirected it to my mail program that is always open. So school emails pop up all the time. I would look into that.
We use Blackboard, but the nursing student association does have a FB page. Blackboard is convenient, because they can post announcements. There are also discussion boards for ideas, networking, carpooling etc.
My favorite new idea generated this way is a student nurse family member support group. We are working on organizing one, since all of our relatives/spouses feel completely neglected. We want them to know they are not alone!!
we use blackboard, but they do have a fb page. blackboard is more convenient, because they can also post announcements. also my college sends out emails to our regular email address we provided, for example like hotmail. this is really helpful since i check my regular emails daily rather than the colleges. that page takes forever to load lol. they don't post much on facebook, i guess keeping in mind that not everyone has a facebook account.
Our SNA uses Blackboard primarily. We also have a Facebook group. Everyone has access to Blackboard but not all to Facebook. Also, people haven't yet realized that joining a Facebook group doesn't give all embers access to your info -- so even if they are on Facebook they are suspicious.
I have also seen SNA's with their own websites.

Dear Group,
My associate degree program is activating the student nurse association. How do other schools communicate to the whole nursing program Facebook or Blackboard?
