Fabulous GPA, horrid NET score!!!!

I am so stressed about getting accepted into nursing school. My cumulative GPA is a 3.86 and my pre-req GPA is a 4.0 but I only scored a composite score of 64 on the NET test!!! I was so flustered with the math portion because of the time limit that I didn't even answer the last 7 questions! And the math portion flustered me so much that I didn't answer the last 3 reading questions. I studied for the test but it didn't help. I'm not horrible at math but some questions just take me longer than one minute to solve.

Did anyone else get into the program with a NET score close to mine?

what is the NET test?

Nurse Entrance Test. It is just a test to show your basic competancy in areas such as math and reading. At my school, you have to score in the 50th percentile to be considered for acceptance.

Don't sweat it. You must know your stuff to have a good GPA. Some of those tests like TEAS test is ridiculous. I scored an 87% and I know I am better than that. The thing that gets to me was all that Geology stuff. I cannot remember that crap even if I tried it would take me forever. I am not feeling bad about it, just move on from it.

I am in the same similar situation. The reading comprehension really got me!! I have a 3.8 gpa overall and 4.0 gpa for my pre-reqs also, but I only managed a 88% composite score on the NETs...

I'm taking the test again next week but I totally agree with Engima2174 that these entrance exams are not always representative of what we are capable of as potential nursing students...

An 88% is great considering. Most people from my school had their score in the 70's.

I agree that the test doesn't represent our actual potential. I think my grades thus far are proof of that. It just sticks because they put so much weight on the score we get on the test. At my school, they go on a point system and our GPA and NET score are the biggest factors. I just pray my GPA will make up for what I lacked in the NET test.

And do you want to know what stinks even more?! (Venting here.....) :o) At my school, they only allow you to take the test once per year. Most other schools in the state allow at the very least one retake. Now that I know exactly what the test is like I'm positive I could do much better if I had a second chance. But oh well I guess. It is what it is, huh?

(Thanks for listening BTW)

I took the NET test back in April (i think) and i made a 76. the program that im applying to requires that u make @ least a 60. Anyway, i found out from reading theses forums that the reading section was the part that got everybody all messed up and i got a book that prepares you for standardized tests and studied it and the most valuable thing that i learned from it about the reading part was NOT TO REGRESS! avoid regression at all cost when reading. Im not good with the whole reading comprehension thing so i when i took the NET i had to literally tell myself that i wasnt going to regress while reading and it really paid off for me. on the inferential reading part i scored 73% (not the best), on the main idea of passage part i scored 100%, and on the predicting of outcomes i scored 82%. Not too bad for someone who would have completely bombed that part of the test otherwise. And as far as the math portion goes, i asked the lady that administers the NET test what i could study as far as the math b/c im not too good in math either and she told me to go to the library and get a GED book and sure enough when i took the math part the things that i studied in that GED book was on there. i hope this bit of information helps someone. God Bless all of you that are struggling with your NET test! Best wishes!!!:wink2:

Wow. Thanks for that tip of the GED study guide. I'm going to go and get one possibly this weekend.

I read your sticky post. Next time I will definitely skip over the math questions that are more difficult for me so I will have more time for them at the end. My biggest problem was that I was spending too much time on questions that were easy for my because I was so flustered.

Thanks for the great tips!

On the web site for ERI, the makers of the NET, you can purchase a downloadable practice exam. It costs $15, but I have heard it is pretty close to the real thing and it is timed for you. I hate to spend MORE money but if it will really help me be mentally prepared for the test, it might be worth it

I'll likely give it a shot!

That's a great idea. I think I will try it. Especially if it is timed. That will help me a lot! Thanks!
