Experienced RN w/kids ready to move

Published

Hello everyone,

I am an an RN w/ 18 yrs. experience-vents/onco/supervision. Husband is an RT. We have 3 school age kids- 13, 11, 10 and are ready to leave Chicago.

We like Florida but know very little about areas good for kids and I am concerned about salary. We have outgrown our home and and have to move D/T this. We don't want to work primarily to afford our home(which is what happens in the Chicago area). I would like to enjoy my life a little.:)

Any information would be greatly appreciated. My father says if we move to FL he is coming with us- maybe he can pay some bills.:)

You are smart to do some research re. salaries. Check out the several threads on this Florida forum where this has recently been discussed.

Florida is so beautifull

If my wife will ever kick me out thats where I am going in a heartbeat.

allgirlsmom,

I know what you mean, my husband and I are also moving from the Chicago area to FL in about 1 year--although I have been looking forward to it for years already, so glad it's almost here. I have a different perspective, b/c I grew up in FL and moved up here in 1995, for my husband. I have been wanting to move back from day one. It is too damn cold up here, too expensive, and corrupt! I won't even mention all the silly little taxes we have here that I had never heard of in FL. Anyway, I grew up in NE Orlando suburbs, thought it was a very nice place to grow up--within about 30 mins. from beaches and themeparks; and am moving to Jacksonville burbs in Jan. 05--that's as far south as I could get my husband to go. The cost of living is much lower down there, not to mention taxes, but so are the salaries--I'm researching recent salary numbers now myself.

Florida is beautiful and the cost of living is not near as high as Chicago. I went to school in Kankakee and have lots of friends in Chicago paying extremely high rent compared to what my husband and I pay. The pay is lower though, but it's worth it. I don't think I could ever go back to the cold again!

I suggest the Orlando area. It is booming and nurses are well paid there. I sugest Orlando Regional Health Care system.

Arnold palmer womans and children's hospital, MD Anderson cancer Institue, Level 1 Trauma, and a great cafateria.

Thanks for all the replies.:)

We won't move for about another year. My husband likes the Naples area, I still need more research. I would like the freedom of changing jobs and hours if I need to (very EASY to do in Chicago). Basically, I don't want to get tied into being "stuck" in a job somewhere.

Anyone have any ideas about hourly rates anywhere?

Happy New Year! Gotta work tonight:(-had Christmas off.

My latest Great Niece was born at North Collier Hospital and the place was beautiful. They received wonderful care.

Hi Cindi ~ Florida is a really beautiful state and there are plenty of opportunities for work. I would recommend that you look into the North Port area if you are interested in raising kids and buying property. My Mom just had a beautiful house built in North Port and the costs were less than $100,000. That is unheard of in many areas of Florida. North Port is one of the quickest growing towns in Sarasota county and the property values are sure to appreciate. It is located just south of Tampa in Sarasota county. A beautiful part of Florida also known as the Gold Coast.

As far as job opportunities, there are several major hospitals in the area that are always looking for nurses. Visit the web sites for the following hospitals to get some of their employment information:

In Sarasota (about 25 minutes from North Port):

Sarasota Memorial Hospital http://www.smh.com

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota http://www.doctorsofsarasota.com

In Venice:

Bon-Secours of Venice

In Port Charlotte (a few miles south of North Port):

Charlotte Regional Medical Center

Bon-Secours of Port CHarlotte

I hope this helps. If you want more information on the area, please feel free to email me privately and I will share as many links about North Port as I have. Good Luck on your move. I just recently moved away from Florida and know that a major move like this can be stressful.

I just visited on of the websites for a Sarasota hospital. They say there are payihg $17.00 for an RN in the Emergency Department. I am ER nurse and find this to be wayyyyyyyyy low for the amount of certs.....recerts....etc that are required to be an ER nurse. Any thoughts?

I am sure the payrates posted are entry-level. I think you can expect experience pay as well as pay for your certifications. I would talk to the nurse recruiters from these hospitals and get some accurate information on wages as well as relocation assistance. Some are even offering sign on bonuses.

Have you made a decision on the location within Florida that you are interested in moving too?

I live in Ohio, but some reason I get a magazine mailed to me every so often called Vital Signs. It's all about nursing jobs in Florida. Each issue has a story with a focus on a different area of the state. And it has tons of Ad's for different hospitals. (of course this is why it's free! :)" Here is the web site
