Experienced RN at age 50; No jobs?

Hey all!

I've been an RN over 20 years with the majority in the ICU. I have CCRN and CNRN certifications and have ASN degree.

So far all my applications to other hospitals have been met with "another applicant has filled the position" I have applied for.

Could this be because of my age? Is it possible?

I'd love to get your take on this :)

It could be a number of things. Unless you put something specific on your résumé that stated your age, how would they know? It could be with all your years of experience and certifications they think they can't afford you. It could also be that you don't have a BSN. Maybe they had an internal candidate apply that they knew would get the job but they were required to post it. The computer that scanned your résumé may have rejected it because it didn't have the correct buzz words.

In other words, don't assume that it's all about age. People don't get jobs for many reasons.

Actually, after reviewing the application I submitted I didn't see anywhere where birthdate was required and I didn't add it to my resume. I guess I'm just nervous after hitting the big 5-0 that I might be washed up. I think I've read too many articles. LOL

That actually puts my mind more at ease. What bothers me tho, is that there are 2 of the same open positions in that department and I applied for one of them. After I read their rejection email I saw that they are still posted. :(

Seems like it gets harder the more experience you have these days.

Personally, I would bet its not having the BSN that is the issue.

You are ONLY 50, have you considered getting a BSN or doing an ADN to MSN? That would open a lot more doors.

I would think the bsn, but also in my experience jobs posted may have been unofficially filled before they were posted. Some one in house usually has a head start

Wow - 2 certifications in very 'hot' clinical specialties. It's hard to believe that employers are not snapping you up. I'd say keep on trying. You're a jewel waiting to be discovered.
