Hi Guys

Just Looking Abit Of Advice From Other Posts And Other Sources Of Information I Am Aware California Tends To Be A High Costof Living, But How Do You Really Manage?? Is It Manageable With Your Wage Or Do You All Struggle??

Could You Maybe Give Me Rough Est Of Hourly Rate. Considering Taking Up Direct Placement With A Hospital There No Specific Location Yet They Are Coming To Interview In Oct And Id Liked To Be Prepared With Some Informationthat Im Hoping You Could Possibley Give Me.

Hope To Hear From You Soon

P.S ANYONE AWARE OF A GROUP OF HOSPITALS THAT CONSIST OF ABOUT 20 TOGETHER IN THE WEST COAST AREA??

Specializes in mostly in the basement.

Actually, there are a lot of reasons a second degree nurse might go the ADN route--$$ being the most obvious. I went second degree BSN despite the huge bill because i figured the money I made in that shorter time would more than make up for tuition and give me greater opportunity. Worked out. However,

Also remember that most in the ADN program already have a BA,BS in another area, so they have way more education that most BSNs do.

I find this rather shaky---I would say "some" hold higher degrees, definitely not "most". I'm not into the whole ADN/BSN thing though i do believe BSN should be the entry point in order to advance the profession---but to say MOST is way too far reaching. However, we do know that ALL second degree and the majority of accelerated programs do hold BA, BS or higher.

PS. NYforlove--no problem :)

The CC's should be accredited to offer a BSN program. I am not saying "wipe out the ADN programs" I am saying give the programs the distinction they deserve. The CC in jacksonville Florida just began offering a bachelors in Fire Safety (?) because of the shortage of firefighters..they have offered an AS degree for 15 yrs in it--but that degree is not considered the "gold standard" for the field anymore.....

Maybe a pipedream, but if they can do it for firefighters, why not nurses? ADN nurses work their butt off to get their degree. IMHO more than what most associate prepared graduates do for an AA in business or something.

I don't think it's a reality to expect communitty colleges to do BS's. BS's happen at the univesity level.

Hmm, really? Why would someone already holding a degree go the ADN route when they could go accelerated BSN and be done faster than getting a ADN?

Yes, its way less expensive and there are not many accelerated programs around here. If their are, they are water down masters degree's that require a lenthy thesis, which many people dont want to spend a year writing.

No, I think you are confused. These programs are just faster versions of a BSN. They spend 2x as much time at clinical and take huge loads and are done in 3 semesters. They are not "paper writing" degrees, they are intensive hands-on degrees

As far as not feasible to have ADN programs convert to BSN programs..why not? CC's are more and more offering BS in specific disciplines and as MANY ADN's state--the classes are teaching the same things minus a few research and ethics type classes. You stated yourself that all these ADN's have oodles of credits..so the general ed shouldnt be a problem for most and are certainly already offered at CC's

There isn't any in my area. We have accelerated masters program at Sac State.

I believe there is a reason why no colleges our state offer a BS at the community college level. If anyone that knows why can explain, please do.

Its actually quite feasible..Many states offer it and many others are considering it. In Canada it is even more widespread. In California there was a bill proposed to pilot it. Read here:

It was me who made the mistake of initially bringing the ADN vs BSN issue into this thread...mea culpa! I apologize!!! It was just a weak moment...and I do regret it becuase it was really just a well-meaning thread to flesh out who was paying how much where (ie. Does the Bay area in California pay more than the Los Angeles area?) so that all of us know what is really being offered out there. Not to make an excuse, but I digressed into that other never-fails-to-ignite argument just because reading of our salaries everywhere (I used to make MUCH more in another field and left it to go into nursing, and in my defense, yes...it was for the altruistic aspect primarily!) irritates the heck out of me. In my opinion, we shouldn't have to pick up extra shifts or work two jobs to make $68K a year, or be happy because you can do that with Holiday and night differential. Hey,anybody can earn enough doing anything almost, if they are willing to work ridiculous numbers of hours... Can you imagine telling a Physical Therapist that sure, you can earn enough if you are willing to work two shifts? Or an XRAY technologist? Or an Occupational Therapist? And I HATE it when some nurses retort with the "if you are going into nursing for the money, best to skip it"... because some dare to ask for the kind of pay this job takes. Even reading "do you think I can live in Los Angeles on this salary" makes me see RED. :angryfire Our salaries should be enough to live on- my hope is that everyone will get active and get political. Nurses are terribly underpaid and every time I see the numbers in print, it drives me CRAZY!!!!!!!!!! :clown: So please forgive me, and if anyone wants to start a political thread just to focus on that- great. But if anyone else wants to honestly post the wages of a hospital and a City that you can vouch for (not rumor) here, that would be great too, and helpful to others who came to this thread hoping for that info. Here's my peace offering: Loma Linda Medical Center in Loma Linda CA pays $22-$28 for starting RNs, depending on area of interest, and of course...the news is that you can earn quite a bit more with Holidays/Weekends and Night Shift. :uhoh3:

State law prohibits California's community colleges from offering bachelor's degrees.

This is the problem.

Yes, that was the first line. Did you read the rest? There is a Bill to try out new pilots programs. It is getting support....the law is an old one that was created when 2 yrs of college was enough.

I think I will step away from this thread. I never meant it to get into this debate. But nursingguy--you should really open your eyes to the possibilities and ability to get nursing where we ALL need it to be. Think outside the box. No one is second guessing that ADN's are wonderful nurses--its just that our field needs to pull together and move forward

Yea, I did. The thing though is the state senate and house are a bunch of elitists that will never let this pass. They go against the will of the people on nearly ever vote and can not be voted out of office because of gerrymandering.

Well, I checked, and it looks like it did pass . So, this is a good step forward. We nurses should come together and start supporting the ideas and stop being so negative about anything that may make it easier for students to get a BSN instead of a ADN. We will ALL be better of if it is the point of entry to have a BSN.
