ok... i'm worried about the online lpn-rn programs. could someone please tell me if this school is reputable and if it is really recognized. just seems like a lot of money to waste if i can't use it... I live in Virginia ..

I just picked up a copy today. Its a nice book, I'll definately be using it for review and practice tests.

I'd like to know how many excelsior students take all the courses and the cpne (clinical test) don't pass it the 1st, 2nd or 3rd time at $1700 per test and never go on to get their RN or have to go to a REAL college. Or maybe they do pass and then find out (because exlcesior will never tell you ) that their state doesn't accept excelsior college student. 7 states now do not accept ec students.

Yes the college is convenient, cheap, easy to pass tests and study on your own, in your own time. But the cpne test is subjective, unfair, unrealistic, expensive, very stressful and no judge of whether you'll make a good nurse. It's pass or fail and should be graded. To flunk this test because you get an apical pulse wrong, bp or do a hand grasp on a neuro assessment rather than a plantar flexion at $1700 is insane. It's around 20% that pass the test the first time, that's crazy and don't believe it when they tell you it's 60%. 1 out of 5 passed it the weekend I went and the 1 is from Lousianna and doesn't know her state doesn't take ec students. No one wanted to tell her. 2 out of 7 another weekend, 1 out 6, 2 out of 11 and on and on. That's really sad.

How many people go thru the whole program and never get their RN and how much is EC making on this scam.. Very sad.

Although I sympathize and agree with you in that the CPNE is subjective and can be unfair for some who have been through it, your post has some misinformation:

1. In some sentences you call EC cheap, then you turn around and call it expensive so I'm confused as to whether you are saying that it's cheap or expensive.

2. Where did you come up with a 20% pass rate?

1 out of 5 passed it on your particular testing weekend at your testing site which is unfortunate and I truely feel for you on that one.

But at the same time, everyone passed on my weekend so it would make just as much sense for me to claim that the pass rate is 100%. The pass rate goes way beyond your particular test group at your test hospital.

3. The Louisiana Board of Nursing has not discussed Excelsior College at any of their meetings since 2005 and they have never changed their policy. They have always had a policy in place of only allowing LPN's to get their RN through EC. I'm sorry if one of your fellow test takers was not aware of this but it's quite clear on their website and this is nothing new.

If he/she is an LPN then yes, he/she can get an RN license in LA with an ADN from EC so it's not true that the state completely doesn't accept it.

It's up to the individual student to find out if the state(s) where they intend to practice accept EC for RN licensure. It's not the school's responsibility.

Yes, I agree that it's very stressful and sometimes unfair. But I've heard plenty of people from other RN programs say the same thing about the school they went to.

They do not have a 20% pass rate for the CPNE. When I went, it was a 60% pass rate. When you take the CPNE, you are proving to them that you are capable of performing tasks equitable to a new RN graduate, and they lay out these tasks in detail in the CPNE manual. If one can't do an apical pulse, BP, or neuro assessment, do you think they should pass? When I did the CPNE (1st time passer), there were only 2 out 6 that passed, but we were the ones who were prepared, and actually did grids, etc.

And, EC makes it very plain on their website which states do not accept EC, and which ones have stipulations. Last I heard, CA was the only state that didn't accept EC outright.

Also, I did not find the tests "easy to pass." Nothing about the program was easy.

I liked the program a lot.

The pass rate is not 20%. When I went there were about 8-10 of us and 1 failed. The 1 who failed didn't study...he failed himself. The CPNE is so dang basic if you just study the guide they send you. I passed first try with no repeats...others do it all the time too. I am sorry but I find this post not accurate. On a different note, things are changing with Excelsior and boards of nursing....this makes it difficult to move around as an RN. For most of us who graduated prior to the California decision, we are grandfathered into most states that made rulings after the California rule. If I had to do it over today, with all the restrictions, I would go traditional. The program fit my needs and I learned alot from it. I am where I am today because of Excelsior! The sad thing is that many people needing an alternative route to obtain higher education may not be able to do EC because of all the changes.

Sounds like you've got a bit of the sour grapes!

Considering that I work with two other EC grads and a RED grad (yes, he's old!), I think that you're way off the mark.

I was well-prepared for the CPNE and passed it - no points off on the lab stations and three passes on the patients. I also worked my rear off to make sure that I could do it.

What did you do to pass the CPNE? Did you attend the EC programs to pass it? Did you attend anyone's program to pass it? Did you do work on the internet to see what the test was all about? Did you call the LEARN folks to get information on the test?

EC, like all programs, is what you put into it. And, it is doable.

Has anyone from Florida obatined licensure from another state then endorsed in? I would like to attend EC. I know Florida BON makes you endorse in from another state. Does that mean you have to live in that state for licensure??

You do not need to live in the state that you're licensed in. I live in NY and hold license in NY and MA. My wife went to school in NY, lived in NY, but her original license is in CT (she has since let it expire, but holds licenses in NY and MA).

If you are a LPN having met the clinical and theroy requirements of your PN program, you should not have a problem with sitting for the NCLEX in FL. The issue is if you are a Paramedic or RT earning the EC degree, you must sit for another state's NCLEX and endorse it back to FL which takes a period of time.
