Excelsior Health Safety Exam

Published

Just took Excelsior's Health Safety exam this past Saturday, do not underestimate this one! I scratched by with a C and thought while I was taking the test that I was doing well. Know the nursing process like the back of your hand, practice some medication calculations I only had two or three of those, know THERAPEUTIC COMMUNICATION. Way too much of that on this test. Know what a helping relationship is and what it involves. Know environmental and physical factors relating to health safety like types of vision changes that can put patients at risk. Know age related safety issues such as for infants, toddlers, adolescents, young adults, middle adults and older adults (for example toddlers and poisonous substances) to me this test is serious BS. I was expecting questions on prioritizing nursing care like "one patient is bleeding and vomiting all over the floor and another patient can't breathe because he got a piece of asparagus lodged in his throat from his lunch from the hospital cafeteria: which one do you see about first?" Making sure the call light is in reach and making sure your patient has on non-skid shoes and you know real NURSING things like that.... nah mostly just psychosocial, psychololgical, "therapeutic" BS. Sorry to be so subjective but just be ready, don't let this one surprise you. I know I was surprised, when they handed me my grade I was like WHAT THE ............

Thanks for your input on the Health and Safety test. I am going on August 8, 2011. Did you purchase the practice test? I purchased the notes from study group 101 along with my own personal notes. But I really didn't want to put more money out for the practice test. However, if it is a need to assisst in passing, I would probably invest. But really really really don't want to spend that kind of money.

By the congratulations. I'm glad that you passed the test. That one is behind you now.

I found a program by nursingexam.net (they have a demo download on their website) on Ebay for $50. It's a practice exam but you can use it without being restricted to just two trys. Anywho, I used it and got an A on the Health Safety Exam!!!!:yeah:

Something like Excelsior health safety exam. Do a search on ebay.

Can anyone give me pointers on how to focus on my excelisor exams i feel so overwhelm with it all. I miss a deadline and had to pay for the exam again. I really need help. Is this a good program; did anyone finish nursing school here?

Could I suggest posting in the Distance Learning for Nurses forum? You'll get many more responses about Excelsior exams.

Did anyone use the study101 cd guide and if so did you find the practice quizzie on the study 101 guide to be helpful?

Original post is correct. I studied, knew all the material (including all 2 med calculations on the test). I just squeaked by with a C because apparently I can't figure out what Excelsior thinks is "the best appropriate nursing response". I did not use the practice exam because most of the material in the study guide is familiar terminology and other duhhhh caliber review (for those with a little clinical experience). So, to reiterate, study communication especially, and everything else mentioned in the original post. There are very few questions that cover definitions, most of them are situation based, choose the best nursing intervention, best nursing response, most appropriate next step, etc... Good luck

I just sign up to this website and hoping that it will be beneficial. I am schedule to take Health Safety exam on wednesday april 23 and I am freaking out. OMG! Lord help me pass this test. Anyone just took the test? please give me some good good pointers. Thank you very much and God bless.

The exam is kind of a review of fundamentals with lots of communication and critical thinking. Follow the content guide outline from EC and work through each section one section at a time and that will help to keep you from getting overwhelmed. I used studygroup101 study guide and the EC practice exams. I recommend the practice exams highly, they really help to focus. I am up to Life span 1 now and using sg101 and their audio review is a real life saver for me, also EC content guide, practice exams.
