Hi Everyone:p,

I'm new to allnurses.com and excited to get started :typing.I've been an LPN :nurse: for almost 26 years with extensive experience in many nursing fields with goal of becoming an RN through Excelsior College program online. My question  is several in fact, first does Pa. recognize Excelsior to sit for Register Nurse boards? Second if I purchase study material only,am I able to take their tests and receive needed credits, referring to the general education credits required. I thought I had seen something to this fact posted on your site prior to becoming a member. Thank you in advance for any help. KLR1234

It is best to check with the BON for the state in which you wish to sit for the NCLEX. It seems more and more states are beginning to not accept excelsior. I'm not sure exactly how many it is now, but, I do know that I just found out about 2 more I was unaware of. I too was thinking of doing the excelsior program, but, with my husband in the military, I can't take a chance I may not be granted a license, even by endorsement in another state.

Yes, as far as I know, EC is okay in PA. However, you do have to check with your BON. There are a few states that don't accept EC for RN licensure and others that have stipulations (like extra clinical hours). Again, your BON will tell you.

For any tests, you will need to pay for the tests AND whatever study material you deem necessary to learn what you need to know. EC has different fees (enrollment fee, for example), that is different than traditional schools. It is important to peruse the EC website so you know what fees there will be. It's not cheap; there are some scholarships available, but there is no federal financial aid available for the ASN or AAS because of the test-out setup of the degree.

Please visit the distance learning board located under the "Students" tab up top. There are a lot of people who are doing EC there.

There is a huge stink in GA right now over this college...be sure to get the facts before you do anything with them. I know several students here are looking at losing out for licensure due to GA not accepting credits.

Yes my friend just took the NCLEX July 15 in GA and as of July 1 (so far) GA is not recognizing EC so he can't work in the state of GA as a RN yet:down:.

I am going to Excelsior to take 30 credits from them going towards my RN-BSN program.

I am going to a public state university, and it's not going towards my license just the bachelor's degree.

I live in PA. I passed the NCLEX-RN last week and am a licensed RN in Pennsylvania. :)

Hope that helps.

I just posted in the PA forum looking for excelsior grads. I will soon be done the program and was wondering if excelsior is frowned upon by employers and whether or not anyone has had a problem finding a job in this area?

One employer told me that I would need to pass boards before I could work there and after that I could only work Med-Surg.

The employer that I went with didn't seem to have a problem with my schooling. Of course now that I've started it seems they don't totally understand the program but that's okay with me, at least I got a job.

Post this is the Distance Learning forum.
