Everyone wants experience.

Every single job I look at for any CM jobs wants at least a year of CM experience. But how do I get that year without experience!? Sigh. The great catch-22 of switching career paths.

If you get CM experience in home health or hospice that would work for most companies wanting CM experience. What they are looking for is your ability to be self motivated and get the job done without someone managing what you do. I work in workers comp and had hospice experience previously. But all arenas are different. Whether you do telephonic work or field work you have to be able to get the job done on your own. And most companies want you to be able to sit for CCM fairly soon. The only way to be able to do that is have 2 years experience in CM or one year being supervised by a CCM. Hospice and home health are usually a lot easier to start than insurance.

I know what you mean, I worked in Social Work prior to nursing and was told during interviews for Nurse CM jobs that my experience was not the right kind either. Oddly, I have used my past experience in Social Work as a Nurse Case Manager to properly analyze and plan the discharge of patients that are complicated socially.

In any case, in order to get my start as a CM in Nursing I landed my first job as a CM for the company I worked for as a clinical bedside Staff RN. You and the OP might want to try talking to your current or former employers (the department managers of Case Management) to see if he/she will be willing to hire and train you as a Nurse Case Manager. One to two years working for that department (along with your CCM if you can pull it off in that time frame) should be enough for you to jump ship to whatever Nursing CM sub-specialty you wish. Try your State contracts for peds case manager. Alot of hospitals utilize home pediatric case managers for the under served.

At my hospital, there are several case manager positions that become available every year. I know several nurses who have gotten the jobs with no CM experience, BUT they had BSNs. None of the nurses I'm thinking of had more than two years of experience at the bedside. So maybe a good option to get your foot in the door is to apply somewhere you work already.

I just got a case manager position where I worked as a bedside staff nurse for about 10 years. I don't have any CM experience, but I think what really stood out was the fact that I worked as a charge nurse. They told me leadership skills is what they desire and the fact that I know a lot about the hospital and the people that work there. As a case manager, it's important to know your resources really well.
