Do not go there! They are a waste of time and money...though I am not sure about the practical nurse program. I did medical assisting.
Hi Oguesswhat,
Thanks for responding. Which campus did you attend?

Why are they a waste of money? Explain a bit more. I have a friend who says that she trained at Ross as a medical assistant and she is currently working at a nursing home as a cna.(uncertified though) What is the average pay for medical assistat compared to cna? I saw that there was a program for patient care tech too. Last year I was thinking of going to Everest, but I didnt know how much the programs were.
I went to Dearborn one. The reason it was a waste of money is cause it cost about 12,000 to go and you get paid $9 an hour. Average is between $8-10 to start.
OCC has a medical assisting program too. Why is it that there are so many low paying jobs out there that require an education? I just started at OCC and I'm not entirely sure if I want to pursue nursing after some of the stuff I ve read on here. I have to pay out of my own pocket for school but am having trouble finding something that fits my interests and I can pay back the loans. I'm 36 with 4 kids and just taking remedial classes at this point. I wont be taking classes that count for anything until next year.

Waste of money = over $12,000 in loans--most of which you have to pay back at an outrageous interest rate so don't forget to tack that on! :angryfire
Although they hook you & reel you in with their sales pitch & lies, you will NOT be certified until you have worked for a year after "graduation." And even though they tell you they will place you for an externship, many students were not placed as promised--they had to find their own site.
And if you think about it, what physician's office would hire you anyway if when your externship is over, this fly-by-night rip-off company will send them another student?
And I don't know who could possibly afford to pay $100 a month to repay the loans while supporting a family & making only $8 an hour--the average rate of pay--WITH certification!
I went for 2 mos :trout: (Dearborn campus) but then quit after realizing many of the things they told me were lies. The final straw was when the instructor handed me an exam & also an answer sheet. (I call that cheating!)
After quitting & contacting MANY people from here to California, I stopped what payments had not been dispersed. They then had the nerve to BILL me!
After many more phone calls & having to PAY for arbitration, the bills stopped coming. Ironically, they have changed their name from National Institute of Technology to Everest.
They are a rip-off. Go to a community college or find an adult education program. I believe the Red Cross also offers classes.

I agree with the other posters, don't go there!
I worked with some Pharm Techs that "graduated" from Everest. Ironically, they were not able to do simple calculations after spending about $12,000 on an education to make $10.00 an hour.
Oh, and don't get me started about how Everest is now taking students in their program that do NOT have high school diplomas.
Your best best is a community college. Heck, you could get an Associate's degree for what you pay at Everest for a "certificate"

My cousin went there and I think she is realizing many of the same things that you stated.
In my opinion, I wouldn't trust it. Why go there when you could go to a community college and then if you want to further your education, your credits could count towards your advancement?

I checked into davenport and they were more expensive to get a lpn than it is for me to pay out of district and get an RN. I also included the price of gas into it since I drive 40 minutes each way and am still coming out ahead. I would do the occ route the waitlist sometimes move a lot quicker than you think. Plus Davenport is a competitive based I was told I would have to have a 3.8 minimum to get in,and depending on my essay i could be passed over. To much at risk to pay that amount and possibly not be able to get in,if you ask me.

I went to Olympia for my PN. I decided to go there instead of being on a waiting list. I signed up for school in July and started in September of 06. I graduated in August 2007. It was about 23k and I owe 3,000 in loans after it's all said and done. I got scholarships from the state and from when I was in high school. I took my boards end of September and passed with flying colors. It shut off after the minimum amount of questions. I'm currently employed at a local hospital on a med-surg unit. I make almost $17 an hour. I have great benefits and they are paying for my to get my RN. I hated going to the place, mainly the politics, but in the long run, I'm glad I did. Instead of waiting 5 years for GRCC RN program without a LPN, I will begin RN classes in September of 2008. It's a for-profit school so what else do you people expect?
