Has anyone ever left nursing for something totally different? I'm interested in seeing what people leave nursing to do.

It doesn't even have to be you, it could be a colleague etc.

Sometimes the stress of nursing gets to be too much and we just need something "easier" to do. Or, sometimes we pick another "profession"

I confess, sometimes I want to go back to being a secretary or admin. assistant. 9-5. Do my work and go home. Is that weird?

Any stories to share?

I took a year off from nursing and worked as a "reading tutor" with Americorps in an elementary school. It was a nice change. However, I was shocked over all the paperwork that was required in Americorps.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Wow - that sounds totally awesome.

I am looking into going to Esthetican/Massage therapy school. Skin care has long been a passion of mine and I have even dreamed of opening up my own spa.

My parents had convinced me that being an esthetican would not be any kind of career- so since i enjoyed the medical field I went into nursing. I have only been a nurse since January and even though I like being in the NICU- I just don't love it. I just don't think I am into hospital nursing and dealing w/all the BULL. I hate politics and even more I hate doctors and the attitudes toward nurses.

This is my main fear of becoming a nurse, i always hear how horrible doctors are. I work for lawyers now, and have gotten used to them. They are all pretty nice people actually. Are nurses treated like their servants?

Are doctors really that bad? I dont want to be treated like a servant. I hear that alot though. I work for attorneys now, and i thought they were horrible at first, but they are all pretty good nice people.

When I was in clinicals years ago, a doctor, reamed an RN in ICU, yelling so loud that even the really sick people looked around. When I was working as a floor nurse I was left as the only nurse on a 40 bed orthopedic floor. One of the better known "pain in the neck" doctors came up and asked what this message meant. Started yelling at me because I had no idea. I turned and walked away and he never did it again.

I can't really say that ALL doctors treat nurses like servants. There are some really nice docs and ones that realize how important nurses are.I have even had several docs remind me of how much they listen to my opinion on things because the nurses are the ones at the bedside. On the floor that I am on in the NICU, I can only say that one doctor is known for being mean and she is mean to alot of people in general-even other docs. Some of the nurses think she is nuts. Anyways I have not had any problems w/her YET but I do know that when I do, I will just have to deal w/it and let her know she does not scare me. Just learn to stand up for yourself and let the docs know that you are not scared and most of them back off. It's the nurses that show fear that the docs love to push around.

I was a school nurse teacher for two years, an elementary school teacher for 30 years, and now I want to go back to nursing-is that crazy or what?

Specializes in ICU, ER, HH, NICU, now FNP.

I left nursing for a year to work as web programmer...It was fun, we rode scooters at work.

I missed patients.

All jobs have politics and abusive jerks on some level - not just nursing

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

I worked with two nurses who've since left the profession for other things.

One was an ICU nurse who had a talent for photography. She used to bring in her pictures and decorate the nurses station. One of the MD's saw her work and asked her if she did any freelance work for pay, and if so, would she do his wedding? She did, and the pictures were beautiful. One of them was featured in a local glossy and that was the end of her nursing career. She became very popular, and very busy, as a photographer. I think she's in Brussels now.

The other nurse worked for my PCP and liked to make pillows, draperies and throws, maybe some light upholstery. She did some excellent work for me when we were in Florida, and she opened a small home decor store. The store took up most of her time, and she just left the doctors office to attend to it fulltime. I hope she goes back to nursing, though. She was instrumental in helping me with my decision to go back to school.

I left nursing for about 2 years and was a Flight Attendant. It was awesome.....but hubby and the kids (teens at the time) didn't care for me being gone 3-4 days a week. It was great to overnight in big cities, the perks of my family traveling for free was awesome as well.

I did enjoy my time away from nursing....but am glad I'm back into it now. Especially since I'm working w/Americas heros.....our soldiers :wink2: .
