How common is it to both get called in early and then get mandated to stay late on the same shift? All of the 11-7 aides, think there were 5 that night, were mandated to stay late and 4 of them had been called in early on top of that.
For the longest time, the unwritten? policy was to not mandate those who had come in early but Day shift was already scheduled four aides short and then another called in. Needless to say, not only did Days call me in early for my shift, they mandated me to stay late that morning. So I ran my butt off from 2030-0930. I love it when the residents ask why I'm still there, but we get reprimanded if we say we are running short on staff.
Our so-called staffing report hasn't been changed since last month and it's supposed to be changed daily. Says we have 24 aides on during the day, but most days I can count 18 at best, haven't seen 24 since the state came visiting. It also says we have 10 on for nights usually we have 8.
I always thought that mandations were to be used to fill in for call-ins, not because we were just scheduled short. Our schedules are made at least two weeks in advance, we have per diem staff. That's two weeks that they have to fill in the blanks. At this rate, I'm going to be burnt out on nursing before I even get to start Nursing-I next week. I'm starting to wonder if our DON is trying to run the place into the ground. Even Head Nurses on the units are starting to complain about the hours their aides have to put in.
We have two "vent certified" aides for the actual 11-7 shift, one is per diem (me) and the other is full time (my better half). While everyone is careplanned 2 assist, management refuses to schedule two aides on the vent unit. They don't even mark on the "cheat sheet" that there is a slot open, the second vent aide is always treated like a spare aide. Our RN can't help with rounds because she has her own duties ie: treatments, meds, suctioning, nightly assesments, tube feed flushes. If she helps on one set, she plays catch-up during the next set. Please tell me not all places are like this.

At my work nurses and aides get highlighted and that means if someone calls in they are supposed to come early or stay late. Yesterday there were 2 aide call ins on days, a lpn and aide on 2nd and aide on 3rd. Luckily one of the aides volunteered to do a 16 hour and that filled some of the spaces. I say supposed to stay frequently someone will say they won't and then we can write them up. I don't if their excuse is important.

Suppose an aide has their children at a care provider and has to get them picked up at a specific time? How is that handled?
From what I can tell, the aide has to make other arrangements, usually at anywhere between 0500 and 0659. Family and personal life come last. So far the only way to get out of mandation is a medical restriction. Even that has to have a specified time limit or it's out the door you go.
They say nurse's eat their young, I guess that is after management chews them up and spits them out first.

I wouldn't put up with that. Period.
My family comes first.

My facility found out quick that they must ASK you if you would stay over, even if it is for an hour or so as they try to find replacements or talk to another shift to fill in early and so on. Many of us have family to contend with after work (like picking up from school or day care) so it didn't fly when they said all the sudden it was mandated! (we nurses threw a hissy!).
Of course that doesn't stop the management pressure tactics to get you to stay...but nothing really stops that anyway!
I just learned to screen my calls really well, and to make sure they never get my cel number...also I have let it be known I have a young child to take to activities after work and to pick up from school (during fall/winter) so I can't stay after day shifts unless I have at least a week notice so I can arrange things. So they only call me in absolute despiration, and assume I will say no anyway...

And they wonder why medical staff are dissatisified with their jobs. I am so glad to be through with bedside nursing

We have a 500 bed LTC facility. We all rotate on a mandatory list for a week. You know in advance that you are on the list and need to make plans in case you have to stay. They first try and get volunteers and/or agency and then they mandate. Once mandated you are off the list until others have been mandated. You can refuse once. Everyone knows the policy when getting hired. I've been there since Jan. and have only been mandated once.
I agree with you, in my mind manditory is for call ins - not because they haven't hired enough people.

I went through the same thing when I was working in ICU years ago. I'd get to work and work my regular shift...only to be told on VERY short notice that I had to stay until 6PM, two hours over. It didn't matter to Management that I had a three-year-old in day care which closed at 6PM, my husband was out of town on business, and I had no one else to pick up my child. I was not given a choice in the matter, even though another co-worker volunteered to stay in my place. Well, these folks were obviously mistaken that I gave a
s--- about them more than my kid, and I quit. :angryfire
Two from our shift got hit again. This time for four hours into the day shift. I noticed that our staffing sheet now says that we have 18 aides for days, and 10 for nights; it's dated August 12. I am afraid to even look at the staffing for evenings because I know that shift has no staff. Our facility calls what seems like daily, thank goodness for caller ID.
Calls to the state, even by families, seem to be ignored. I really wish that the state would start looking at payroll records so they could see beyond their three day visit.

I just started a new job and being new to the field and all i didn't really know about mandation. I had always heard this facility was a very nice one and treated you great. All has gone good and well, i love the residents and pretty much all of my co-workers but the mandation is killing me.I asked my superviser if she would be able to work something out because i go to school full time also.Well her answer was a flat out nothing i can do for ya!Now i am being mandated all the time.Going in for 16 hours at the least and still going to school.I love the job, nursing has always been a passion but this seems to be killing me.What should i do?
