Probably not very comforting but its part of economic cycles. Nursing jobs become tight during recessions. This recession is deep, its been over 2 yrs now and could easily go for another year or more, but this too shall pass. Not sure AZ will be what it was, any time soon, given our meager industry base.
Absolutely!!!! I know that it is hard to believe that there is a nursing shortage... Because there isn't one... YET. Many nurses, I forgot what the percentage is but it is close to half of all of the nurses in the US are over 50, meaning that many of the nurses are going to be retireing soon (Next 5-10 years). So there will be a lot of open positions :) Also the baby boomers are getting older and needing more medical help. Which is perfect because by the time you get done with nursing school (hopefully) these jobs will be available for you.
Nursing is the TOP RECESSION PROOF JOB!
This Forbe's article has been discussed ad nauseum:

Anyone that has looked for a nursing job in the last year KNOWS that nursing is NOT recession proof.
Who knows what the economy will look like in 2 or 3 years. Follow your dream.
I heard nursing has ebs and flows. Who knows what the market will be like in 2 years or how ever long it takes you to get a degree. In 2007 when I started my pre-reqs the market was a boom town with huge sign on bonus and new grad programs everywhere.
You do what your passionate about. If you've always wanted to be a nurse, then go for it. If you are doing it for the money you think you could be making- then well... I think there is ALWAYS something out there, you just have to look under alot of rocks and perhaps kiss a few frogs! Good luck with your decision!
Tell me one profession where it is easy to find a job right now! Then answer your own question. Just go to school. If you were graduating into ANY field right now, it would be very hard to find a job as a new grad. The current economy shouldn't have much bearing on what you want to do for the rest of your life.
