Does anyone know anything about the ERI testing?:stone
I have the med-surg one tomorrow. Apparently my director expects us to fail it because most of the info won't be covered until med-surg 2 next quarter. I took fundamentals yesterday, which wasn't that bad, and patho on Tuesday. We didn't go over ANY endocrine in patho (prof. ran out of time for some reason) and we never discussed cellular processes... and there were probably 25 questions on cells and endocrine. I don't know how I passed that thing.
I don't honestly think there is a way to study for them because they don't necessarily correspond with what you have learned in your classes. If you haven't learned about that disease or device or drug, how can you accurately answer questions about it?
I did the practice med-surg and fundamentals test and found them to be okay because they familiarized me with the types of questions, but they don;t give you rationales until the very end and sometimes the rationales are not complete (it'll say something like "this is not the most important priority" which tells you NOTHING about which answer was correct.. some of my classmates took the practice test 4 times so they could answer different answers each time to figure out which one was right because the rationales were useless).
My school gave at least one ERI each semester. They do help with critical thinking skills and prioritizing and the scores are predictive of how you'll do on the NCLEX. After graduation we could call the company, get a log in and review our exams and take additional exams and review their study materials, free. I think we paid $50 or so for each exam in school. I thought these exams were simplistic but our entire class passed NCLEX on the first try, many with no other review.
We have to take them every two weeks or so- we just have to score the average and it doesn't apply to our grade at all. Rumors are that one of the instructors is using them for her Masters dergree somehow, but pretty much everybody agrees that they're BS and a waste of time. And I absolutly hate the rationals- either nonexistant or incomplete.
I guess that is the reason our school waits until 3rd semester to give both sets of Med Surg ERI's and OB/PEDS ERI...to make sure we have covered hopefully more of what is on them. Our school breaks up classes really crazy to me, but I guess they have their reason. Let me know how your ERI goes. I practiced the pharm test on their website and passed it without any trouble, but about 14 of my classmates failed pharm ERI the first time around when we took it for real.
I just took the fundamentals practice test and scored one point below the national average (73 instead of 74). I will need to keep practicing because our school requires us to pass at least 4 points over the national average to progress onto the next class - yikes! I don't mind it, it does seem to hit on a lot of things we haven't really studied, so that is frustrating, but it does now give rationales. However, some of the rationales have been less than helpful, it just really depends on how you interpret it. Best of luck with ERI testing, it is definitely getting to be a big deal in our state's nursing schools!
I'll top that! Our school just added a requirement that we meet national average on the ERI nursing care of adults RNCAP test at the end of this semester or we do not move on to our final semester of nursing school. People that do not pass are out of the program and do not get anything for the last 18 months of hell. Disregarding the fact that we don't think they should be able to do this, I don't think anything is going to change in the 2 weeks we have to prepare for the exam. I am freaking out! I am a high B or A student, and I generally do well on exams, but I hate the idea that my future is riding on 1 test, even with the NCLEX, repeats are possible if you screw up. (BTW, our school has always had a policy of everyone having an 80 average or they don't move on, so we've already weeded out a good part of our class, but apparently that's not good enough). Anyway, enough complaining, guess I better figure out this ERI stuff pdq.
Our school's always been like that.. Have to meet national average on all.
Now that I have taken many ERIs, I will tell you that if you go onto the ERI website and go under "coaching materials" there are audio things to listen to. The main topics they cover are the topics they cover on the exam. If you have time, listen to at least a couple of them.
I also found that the lady on the coaching materials talks really slow, so I open the coaching in windows media player and change the play speed to "fast" so I can speed through it quickly. :) They do have practice tests also that will give you an idea of the types of questions. Good luck with them.
We are very limited on the ones they allow us to do. And there are no rationales. How do I see the rationales? It would be great practice to have the rationales available, but of course from our school that would be asking too much.
The rationales and correct answers will never be known. We take the ERIs at my school and contacted ERI to get this information, they stated that it can not be released as it is a "standardized test" and doing so would compromise the test... Needless to say our school still has to take them, and still hate them!

Our school loves ERI's. We have to pass Pharmacology, Med Surg I and II, and the OB/PEDS I and II. Then in our last semester, we have to pass the RN assess to graduate. I wish I knew a way to study for them. I have no idea how I passed the pharm...so many drugs on there are not even frequently used any more. If anybody has any tips on the MED SURG ones...please help. I have them coming up sooner than later unfortunately.
