I am just wondering if any of you have ever had a "retreat day" with any of your fellow members of your staff and if you did what did you do? If you never have had one what activities what do you think you would be interested in doing... and I am not talking reviewing ACLS, or any eduational activities. I am looking more for ideas for stress management, team building, and a way to generate ideas to make the ER " work " better from a nursing perspective.

I've been to a comedy club, bowling, and other activities with my entire unit before. It was fun.

At the SuperBowl in Plano about 1.5 decades ago for a few yrs we had an ER nurse only bowling league. No spouses, no family members , just ER RNs, no MDs, they might get smacked with a bowling ball, and absolutely no Administration types at all. Lots of fun

We do a retreat annually in the summer. It's mostly education stuff though, not much fun if you ask me...

When I worked nights at Parkland, it was called "breakfast"

About every 2 weeks, there is a bunch of us who have an unofficial retreat - a liquid lunch!
It works wonders for morale.
Have also been known to head out for "breakfast" too.

Superbowl party, Christmas party, Cider making party at one of the docs ranch (kids love that one), Skiing trips, Breakfast after NOC's or drinks after mid-shift, lots of biking trips both mountain biking and road biking...we do a lot of socializing in our dept.

Which is precisely WHY we need the retreat LOL. Give me mine with a day spa, massage, and a mango marguerita or four! You can keep the team-building seminars, leadership discussions and morale boosting pep rally's. At the end of the day, it's still us on the front line being overwhelmed by patients.
Would love to have more social events but we're always working, filling in, and working some more. And let's not discuss committees, ok?
