i was looking into taking an emergency pediatric care course, originally pals, but i stumbled upon the enpc. the enpc course touts itself as the "ultimate" pediatric care course, but do hospitals look more favorably on one more than the other? can the enpc substitute for the pals?

I think both are valuable, and my particular ED would like you to have both (but REQUIRES you to have PALS). I haven't actually taken ENPC (have it this week in fact), but what I've been told is that it goes into more depth on several topics regarding pediatric emergency care that PALS does not (like poisoning, trauma care, etc). PALS focuses mostly on cardiorespiratory arrest and shock. I've also been told that ENPC goes into greater depth in the area of assessment. I dunno...I'll find out this week.

Most hospitals require PALS for critical care/ED and the ENPC is often recommended but not required. Gosh, what to do? Will your hospital pay for one or both? Try taking both of them...

Two entirely different animals. Both valuable. PALS is usually required and ENPC suggested. ENPC is not a substitute for PALS.

In our hospital ENPC is a substitute for PALS however we have to have had PALS before we can start substituting it with ENPC. I think ENPC is a much, much, better course and would take it even if it didn't replace PALS for me.

Both are fabulous. PALS is more focused, along the lines of ACLS, whereas ENPC is the whole spectrum of taking care of peds patients as an ED nurse. Take both if you're able! ENPC was great.

If you really want to be ready for any kiddo that comes through the ED then you should do both... and add STABLE to the mix.

ENPC is a course offered by the Emergency Nursing Assoc that deals with peds assessment (usually in emergency situations). PALS is a course offered by the American Heart Association that is only about cardiac/resp resuscitation for peds. (This is obviously the simplest definition of both). They are 2 different courses, they are NOT interchangeable. Take both.

Our facility requires PALS and encourages ENPC. I learned alot from both courses, and it looks good on a resume later
