Enjoying homecare!!

Ok so I am not working full-time or anything but I pick up a few homecare shifts a week as a CNA.

It's obviously so much nicer then LTC or Acute care. I actually don't dread going into work and when my shift is over I say "that's it?".

Just nice because I want to keep up my hours so I can renew my license and the stress is low enough I can actually focus on schoolwork in the evenings. When I was doing LTC with like 12 patients I thought I was going to go mad.

I can see myself doing this a long time and it will be great because it'll look good on my resume. I tend to job hop a lot with LTC because of the stress!

So just food for thought.. if you are fed up with LTC.. try homecare!!

When you do what you love you dont ever have to spend a day "working"

congrats

I know how you are feeling. I worked 15 years that's right 15 years at a LTC and I just could'nt take the crap any more. Now I'm in homecare with one person. It was so nice for a while but now I'm just feeling well... how can I put it bored !!! I'm sure she is bored with me too! I have been at this job for 9 yrs. That's right I have been an aide for almost 25 yrs ! I started when I was 18 ! Where did the years go ? I know it's time for me to move on but I don't want to disappoint her. I probably will stay till I graduate nursing school. But some times I just don't know what to talk about. May be once I start nursing school full time I would'nt feel this way because I would only be working only week ends. Time will only tell. Try not to limit your self to one person. It's not good for them or you !! This is for many reasons.:twocents:

Can you do home care without being a home health aide?

There are a couple types of home care. Aides ( certified and non certified ) and companions. What miffs me is where I work we have some aides that don't do personal care. But get payed the same as an aide that does !!! :crying2:

I agree. Midway through my pregnancy with my daughter, I had to quit working at an LTC. The demands of the job were too much for my pregnant body. So I found a job doing home health. It was a lot less stressful. At the end of the day, I would say "that's it" as well. It paid about the same and I had more time to focus on my new family. I recommend home health to anyone. It's no good if you like a lot of action though.

Yes you can be a home health aide without being a CNA.

It angers me that some of them do not have the schooling I had, yet they get paid the same EXACT pay as me. I don't get it. That is one of the few pet peeves I have with home health. You could walk in the door non certified making $10 just to do housework, yet me a CNA, who maybe had housework & personal care would get the same pay. Not fair at all.

Thanks for answering my question. I am currently a CNA in a ltc facility. Not exactly in love with my job and one of the home health agencies here is hiring. However, I didn't think I could apply since I have not taken the home health aide class.

That's the problem I'm having now. I miss alot. Now don't get me wrong there are things I DON'T MISS !! I do miss talking to residents and staff. And believe it or not some family members. There are a few I don't miss. But most of them were great. I happen to be lucky that I take care of a wonderful woman now. But like you said if you like a lot of action. It does become very boring at times !!! This might sound sad but some times my big thrill of the day is when I go to get her mail and I happen to run into one of the neighbors. There's just so much you can say to one person. And I'm sure she feels the same way !!!

Tell me about it I feel your pain !!! There is one good thing that I do personal care: this way her husband gets a break. Is that I get more hours. You see we are needed more and once I get there I stay and do the other things. I'm the primary aide so I get the bulk of the hours. The other aides fill in on my days off. Another problem I have is no benefits. I don't need the health benefits, but I do miss the sick days and the vacation days. I just came back from vacationing in Disney , so now my next pay will be just be a half pay. This just STINKS !!!! :(

Yeah, I hate the no benefits part. My job offers benefits for full-timers, but it costs so much, many of them declined the health insurance portion of it. Health coverage literally costs 1/2 your paycheck bi-weekly if your a CNA or HHA.....it's not as bad a financial strain if your a nurse. If something happens with your client and you can't get hours that day(s), it could really put a damper in your finances. I think there is something very wrong about health care employees not having health coverage. Even if it is personal care in one's home. IMO, it just sounds so wrong!

i agree with you. it is very comforting and easy but god it is very boring, although i was very busy with my nclex studing every day. i felt i was in a jail. acording to my agency i can't use my vehicle to go out with my client i didn't knw that first so i used to take hime to the mall useing my gas and my car. my client was very happy eavery day hea sked me to go out then one day he said" i liked you than the old aid cause she refused to use her car". i immediatly call my agency and they told me we sorry we should told you that. i asked him to use his car the next day he refused telling me " gas coast too much" . so we had to stay home every day it is stressing and isolating. you have to smile all day even if you have bad day, you have to do extra things so they can keep you, visitors think you are the maid !!!!!!!!!!!
