Emory Summer 2014 ABSN/MSN

U.S.A. Georgia

Hello,

The application for the Emory School of Nursing is now available. I have started my application and want to connect with anyone else who is applying to Emory.

I don't have anything in my to do list either. My pre reqs are done. I hope we find info soon!

I'm starting to think we'll be waiting until the very end (Jan 15th) for an answer... We all should have baked several cakes..

I haven't baked a cake yet. I was proud of myself until I went to a trivia night/fundraiser tonight and scarfed down two brownies and a pile of popcorn. For a good cause, of course...

Lol! I've eaten 2 cupcakes and melted 4 tablespoons of chocolate into my almond butter over the past few days :) Isn't this process teaching us patience? I agree with HCE 2014 in that we probably won't know until the end (closer to or on Jan 15th) so we better try to focus on other stuff.....otherwise I'm going to gouge my eyeballs out because of impatience and the emotional rollercoaster I'm putting myself on, ha. Do you guys have a back up plan to apply to other schools? I'm thinking Ga state, and a couple of others.

I've also applied to OHSU, Seattle U, and (interview is Thursday). Emory is actually my second choice behind OHSU, but they accept so few people that it's more like an alternate first choice, if that makes sense? I am from Atlanta, but really despise traffic (it's why I moved away), so that's my only real complaint with Emory.

gabookworm- OHSU is great! I'm from Portland and its wonderful. However-- I went to an open house earlier this year and they said they have over 600 applicants for their ABSN program. The Direct Entry program is a little less competitive in numbers, but applicants usually have other degrees, and more work experience. I'm sure you'll do great regardless, just wanted to pass on the info I got earlier this year.

Have any of you been able to get an idea of the average overall gpa and stats of accepted emory absn/msn students from the past?

Congrats on getting an interview Gabookworm! That's awesome! As far as getting an idea about the average overall gpa and stats for Emory's absn/msn program, I have scoured almost every allnurses.com post referencing this program since 2009, and it looks as though they accept a vast array of gpa and stats. I've read about someone having a 2.80 average and average TEAS or GRE and getting in, and I've read about someone with a 3.9 gpa and 310 GRE stats getting in. I think they really do look at applicants holistically, and they take everything into account. On one of the posts from 2012 or 2013, I saw that 60% admission is how well the essay is written, and 40% is the quantitative aspect. That comment was written from a nurse that was already admitted into the program and in her second year (BSN 2nd degree segue). For example, if someone has a GPA and GRE score that are both in the higher percentiles, then that is obviously fantastic and will help tremendously. However, if this same person has little life and volunteer experience, and/or has average references (references that aren't that supportive), then I think that is taken into consideration. There is also the opposite where someone might have a lower or average gpa and average gre scores, but this individual has significant life experience that include volunteer and leadership services along with supportive references, so that has to be taken into consideration. There is also the candidate with a mix of the two, (but I think that is more rare because that involves 80 hours a week between school and working). I really think the whole process is very subjective to each individual, which is just another reason why I love this school and it remains my number one choice. I read all those posts from 2009 to the present thinking that I could find some inkling of an average gpa and stats to weigh my chances against, but the differences among the qualitative and quantitative stats were just too vast. However, this is just my experience, so if you guys read through them and reach a different conclusion, please share it :)

I found the same thing, Sonata32. When I went to visit Emory some of the students said the same thing. One said she applied to 12 programs and only got into Emory (despite it being very competitive). I am very confused about the TEAS test though-- I know it was required in the past, but I never saw anything about it being required this year... Did I miss something?

Nope HCE2014, you didn't miss a thing :) I included the TEAS part of information because it looks as though in the past (2009+) it was required, but I know it was not required this year, just the GRE. You are good. Also, did you know that Wednesday the 15th is also a full moon? I'm not 100% into astrology, but I just thought that timing was kind of cool. Hopefully we don't all go nuts before the 15th, lol.

Don't we all have other degrees to be applying to ABSN programs? I'm old and have previous grad degrees, and I applied to the direct-entry program at every school I listed. Maybe for once my prominent laugh lines will work in my favor! Lol

Previous grad degrees is what I was referring to. Yes, I assume we all have a BA/BS

Ah, ok. Well, maybe that will help me, too... or maybe not, if everyone who applies has one. ;) I'll take whatever I can get, though. ;)
