Emory applicant for 2011

Published

Greetings everyone:

I just sent in my application for Emory University for next year. I was wondering if anyone else has applied or are planning to apply. Currently, I am taking classes at GPC. I would love to start a little support group. If anyone is a student at Emory and would like to offer some advice it would be much appreciated too. Good luck everyone!

My application wasn't complete when I started using OPUS. There is a checklist on the side of OPUS that tells you what you are missing from your application. It said I was missing my application fee and that one transcript, which I wasn't. I had to send a receipt for the application fee and send the new official transcripts. I'm sure yours will be set up soon. You can always go to the OPUS site, just google EMORY OPUS, and put in your information to see if they have set up your account yet. It's just your social and birth date.

To go to PA school, you must have a bachelors in something so I want to get mine in nursing so I can also apply to nurse anesthetist school as well. I'm also interested in organ transplant so I'll just have to see where it takes me. I may try to work a couple of years between the two just to pay off some student loans, which I'm sure I'll be accruing.

What are your plans?

@shiningstar05 - Thanks so much for the info on the orientation. I wish I would have been able to attend, it sounds great. That's the one problem that I have with Emory - on paper I think they sound like a fantastic program, but I haven't been able to find out too much in the way of people's actual experiences.

@williamhart1984 - ah, that makes sense. I am thinking that I will end up down the FNP route, but I want to keep my options open and see what the other areas of nursing are like. Who knows. Maybe I'll end up in psychiatric nursing.

I was looking at their ABSN program.

Shiningstar05 - what did you like about it? how was the orientation?

Hi guys!!

I am currently an emory student in the BSN/MSN Segue program. Just finished my first semester! :-)

I wanted to wish you all good luck! and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask! :-)

Thanks so much for the offer. I definitely have some questions for you. How is it so far? What are you doing as far as financial aid? When did you find out that you got in? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hope you have a great holiday.

Hey William! :-)

It is amazing so far! After 1 semester I feel like I know sooo much! I did apply for financial aid, scholarships and loans, here is the link for financial aid information if you'd like to take a look: Emory | School of Nursing

I found out I got in in February, beginning of february, around the 6th I think.

Advice let's see ... Emory has a very very intense nursing program, I am not trying to scare you but prepare you. Rest as much as you can while you have not started yet, have fun, relax, enjoy your "free" time.

Hope I was able to answer your questions. Anything else, feel free.

Thanks so much Giovie

We were also told that it would be February before we would hear anything. I'm glad that you like it. Did you apply to any back ups? How are the clinicals? I'm still working on my pre-reqs at GPC right now. What do you think is the hardest part of the nursing program?

I did, I have applied to schools that had the combined BSN/MSN program in the states, I applied to a few different states, I am originally from Boston, so applied to one school there, a couple of schools in NY, some in the south. Got accepted to Emory and a couple of others. Picked Emory because I definitely needed to get out of the cold weather ( it's still very cold here this time of the year lol) - Now that I am here at Emory, if I had to choose again, I would choose Emory all over again! I think the sense of community that exists in that school is just amazing! The faculty, the students, everybody is there to help and you and want you to succeed, you're definitely not alone!

Clinicals are clinicals lol, 1st semester you're clinical hours are 7 am to 3 pm, you're expected to be there around 6:45 am- it is best to use this time to complement what you learn in class and labs. I thought my clinical time was really fun, again use it as an opportunity for you to learn instead of walking around just because you have to be there ( some of us really did) ... what you learn in clinical, will be very useful throughout the semester. Second semester clinicals are 12 hours, 7am to 7pm - and we get to choose between Medsurg, and maternity/peds.

I think the hardest part for most of us was to learn how to think CRITICALLY! We all struggled with Fundamentals/Clinical Nursing at first; just because it definitely was not the way we were used to think about things in general. Most of our exams are NCLEX style questions, and we start very early to prep for the NCLEX! I guess that is a plus for us!

Organisation is key! You will have a lot of reading, studying, exams, quiz, lab assignments, etc ... thrown at you all at once. If you're not organized, and do a little bit of everything as it comes to you, you will feel very very overwhelmed by mid semester. ( and trust me you do not want to feel like that!)

So technically, if you do not procrastinate, and you do your work as you go along. You should be ok.

Pharmacology was another class that we all thought was pretty challenging, just because of the amount of drugs that we had to remember, we all thought that it was impossible ... again, if you start studying your drugs, from the very 1st day of class, you should be fine.

So in summary, it is a lot of work, but if you stay on top of everything, you should be fine. It is very easy to get distracted and slip, but once you get back up, and stay up, you really should be fine.

Thanks so much. That was really useful information. Hope you have a great holiday and if I think of anything else, I'll definitely let you know.

So my OPUS account just updated to show what pre-req classes I am missing. Today is the first day that it has shown this information. Did anyone else's update? Hope it means that we are one step closer to a decision.

I finally managed to access OPUS, but it doesn't seem to show what pre-reqs I am missing. What section did you go to in order to see that? It may also have to do with when you submitted. I am thinking that you submitted a little sooner than I did, so they may have made it through more of your file. Though I would love to see that info to make sure it is what I think it is!
