Emory applicant for 2011

Published

Greetings everyone:

I just sent in my application for Emory University for next year. I was wondering if anyone else has applied or are planning to apply. Currently, I am taking classes at GPC. I would love to start a little support group. If anyone is a student at Emory and would like to offer some advice it would be much appreciated too. Good luck everyone!

Shiningstar05 - what was the orientation like? I'm out of state and not able to attend any, but had really wanted to in order to get more info about Emory!

oaktown2,

I really enjoyed the orientation because it was very thorough, and any questions you may have had were sure to be answered by either the faculty or actual nursing students. We received the history of the school, the types of students that they are looking to be admitted, research opportunities, financial aid information, and instruction on how to submit your application. If you had questions on whether a class would be transferred, for instance, that would be answered. We also got a tour of the class rooms and simulation lab, and spoke with the faculty in which she gave a demonstration of how the class would be set up. We had the opportunity to speak to about 7 students in a more closer setting to ask them any other questions..from the top of my head I remember them answering questions like: What they would recommend for preparation once accepted? What was most challenging as a student? How to make your application stand out? How do they study for exams? How to get into their desired nursing field once they graduate? They also discussed their class schedule, and the diverse background of nursing students in their class...what the faculty is like and how they truly enjoyed Emory. I walked away with a lot of notes and confidence after getting a chance to talk to one nursing student outside the school one-on-one. It was a great experience to learn more about the school and whether Emory is for you. :)

@Williamhart I just submitted my application today!

It took FOREVER. I currently have been accepted into KSU's program but hope I can get into Emory's. My GPA is currently a 3.52 and I have 2 more pre-reqs (which Ill finish in the summer if I get accepted). I have tons of volunteer experience. So we will see!

Have you heard anything back yet?! It would be nice to have a buddy to share this long and tedious process with haha!

And I do think they review applications when they are complete. I read somewhere that the application committee meets twice a month!

Soooo hopefully all my recommendations get in before they meet again and KSU sends out my official transcript before they meet again that would be nice! Wishful thinking maybe :-p

I think that they do meet twice monthly to review complete applications but will only send out offers in February. I graduated from Surgical Technology school a few years ago and got a lot of experience in surgery then. Ultimately I want to go to PA school so I'm also applying to Respiratory Therapy school at GSU. My once concern with Emory is the cost for a bachelors degree. If I get accepted, I'll just have to deal with the cost because I really want to go to Emory.I haven't take the TEAS yet because I don't think Emory requires it but will probably take it early next year. What other programs are other people looking into?

They give "rolling decisions" they will review the apps as they receive them is what I was told by numerous nursing students. I think that IF you apply on the early deadline Jan 15th then you will know by Feb 15...

So we will see! I think there are a lot of scholarship opportunities with Emory...

The new TEAS version 5 is another story.....LOL

@ Creece

I believe that they will not even look at your application without the 3 recommendations and all of your transcripts. Based on what I was told, they only view complete applications. I even hand delivered my transcripts just to be on the safe side. Have you seen your OPUS account yet? Does it show that you need anything?

Well I JUST submitted my application today. So I haven't even got the link for OPUS yet or anything.

I have been working on my personal statement all day haha

My letters of rec. should be sent in all by this week (according to the professor's who are sending them)

and they should receive my transcript this week. So I am hoping by the end of this week they will have everything!!

I heard it usually takes about a month to know something....so def keep me posted!

Right after u sent in your application/paid your application fee did you get a link to OPUS or did it take a little while?

It was pretty quick. I think maybe a day or two. The personal statement definitely took me a while. I wasn't sure exactly what they were looking for so I just made sure that I answered all the questions that they asked. I think my essay was good but I have no idea.

All of my references were done online so they showed up pretty quick. When I got my opus account it showed that they were missing one of my transcripts which I knew I turned in so I had to call. Apparently, the school gave me unofficial transcripts so I had to go back and get my actual transcripts and deliver them. By the time I got home from delivering the transcripts, they had already taken it off of OPUS. Now that I'm out of school for the holidays, I'm going to have a lot of time to think about getting my acceptance letter.

@williamhart1984- how were you notified of your OPUS account? I submitted my app and have received two actual letters from them saying that they received my app and what was missing, but I don't think I have received anything about the OPUS account. That one is different from where you submit online, right?

Ok thanks! Yeah KSU has a link on there website where they mail it to emory certified etc...so that's always nice!

I had some medical student friends give me input on the personal statement! So we will see!

Def. keep me updated! It should be around a month!

Then if i get in I will need to figure out ways to pay for it all ahhhhhh!!! lol

@ oaktown

I just went to log in one day where we logged in to submit our application and the link had changed to OPUS. It makes you put in your social security and birth date.

I'll definitely let you all know as soon as I find out anything. I'm just waiting for the first of the year so I can fill out my FAFSA.

@williamhart1984 - was your application totally complete with references and transcripts? Maybe that is why I haven't received it. Hopefully I can get my references in by the end of the month.

How come you are looking at doing nursing school before doing a PA program? Can you not go straight into a PA program?
