Emory Accepted Students Fall 2011

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

Hello! I have been accepted to Emory's 2011 BSN program, and I wanted to create a new place for those that have also been accepted to keep in contact as we prepare for the fall. I am also interested in current and past students to offer any vital information that will help make this transition easier. I know this will be a very challenging program and I can only imagine everything I must do to be successful. So all advice and discussion are welcome!

As of now, I am very anxious about financial aid because it is unlikely that I will be able to submit my income tax return by March 15th. What are all my joining class thinking about now that we got the acceptance part out the way?:yelclap:

OPUS will not let me view my financial aid. It says that aid may currently be in process or that my file may be incomplete. I have three prerequisites that are incomplete...I'm not sure if that counts as an incomplete file for viewing aid. For those of you who can view your financial aid package, is your file complete or can you still have prerequisites in process? Also, does the aid package include Emory scholarships or are they just showing Federal loans/scholarships?

Hi molls11 - I still have prereqs so that doesn't have anything to do with the aid. I would contact one of the advisors to see what the issue is. I am only able to seeing Federal things, but that may just be what I was awarded.

SO here is the scoop on Hope...they will not evaluate us for HOPE until the hours from our schools we are taking now show up..(which will not be until the end of this semester)...HOWEVER- whatever amt of HOPE we get...it will be deducted from our nursing grant....So if you have a large nursing grant I would leave it alone...if you only got a small one I would def have them put in your hours for HOPE....

ANy other scholarships that are put on our package will be deducted from our financial aid grants...

I cannot see my financial aid either:confused: Hope they post something soon. I would really like to know!

@creece

Did the person you speak to explain why we can't have both scholarships and grants? It just seems that they could make it more affordable by allowing both. I'm not liking this at all! I emailed my financial aid advisor and have yet to hear from her. We'll see how this plays out. In the meantime ... back to my scholarship search!!

Yes that would defeat the purpose of searching for scholarships if they in turn deduct that amt from your grants....I spoke to an advisor today and she didn't mention anything about the amt of Hope u gets being reduced from the grant amt, but then again, I didn't specifically ask her that. I would think she would mention it since I was going throught the numbers with her and adding in Hope too. I also asked her about why some ppl get less aid than others and she said that students pursuing a 2nd degree or "independent" students have a cap on the amt of grants & scholarships u can get from Emory based on need. Now I understand it better. It would still bring the amt of loans I need to roughly 16k per year, which is not ideal but not entirely super bad either....at first, I was quick to make the decision to go to GSU but after the initial dissapointment and sticker shock, I know I have to really think about this very carefully. I certainly do not want to regret anything down the road. I pray that I make the right decision.

sorry for the mispelled words, i was typing too fast...oops!

@yayaccepted this is the email I got from the financial aid advisor when I asked her about HOPE

Mr. Reece,

In reference to the Hope award, you cannot be evaluated for the Hope scholarship until all Kennesaw State hours are entered into our system. We have a Hope Panel where hours from other universities are to be entered. Your panel is empty. Once your KSU hours are entered, we will evaluate your eligibility for the Hope Scholarship. Please contact the Nursing school for assistance in getting your KSU hours entered on the Hope panel. Please keep in mind, that if you are eligible for the Hope award, that we will reduce the nursing school grant by 2,000 in order to add the Hope award of 2,000. It is not on top of the nursing school grant.

That would be awesome if the HOPE is in addition to our grants- but from the email it does not sound like that is the case....I wish everyone in the financial aid office would get on the same page!!

I know, I wish they would make it less confusing. I will email them too to see what their response is to me. Will let u know if I find out anything different.

In my email response, I was told that if I wanted HOPE I'd have to apply for it at the GAcollege411 website. No mention of what you were told creece. The first time I called the financial aid office about the HOPE award not being on my financial aid, the lady sounded very surprised and mentioned that their office had been getting various calls about this.

On a different note .. who's going to the admitted student day event? ;)

starsinmyhands & creece- I talked to another person in the fin aid dpt today bcause my advisor wasn't in, she said HOPE would be added on top of the aid I currently have. She also said that it's on a case by case basis, whether or not you can receive those funds on top of what's given to you. She said there are a lot of factors involved.

Creece- maybe you should try calling instead and see what they say.

Starsinmyhands- I have reconsidered going to Emory, have you? I'm not sure what I'm going to do but I will make a decision by this weekend. I've registered for the accepted student day but I have so many impt things going on that day at school. I will try to get around all that stuff bcause I really need to visit Emory.

starsinmyhands- also you are right, dependent students get more aid. i confirmed it with my fin aid advisor. if u are a second degree seeking student or an independent student, ur aid is capped at a certain amt she said. it's great for the dependent students but not for us. ah well, that's life... i don't want to take out loans either but if i still wanna go to Emory, looks like i may have to take out around 7k per semester! OMG...i pray that i will make the right decision, this is very stressful!
