"To force the people who save our lives to live on food stamps has to stop...Now more than ever we must value nursing. Nursing is about more than just medicine; it's about engaging with another person on a human level - like hugging a daughter who knows that she is about to lose her dad...I vow to champion nurses and support workers and to help you gain the recognition and money you deserve."

Most likely the UK as the article mentions the awards presentation occurred in London. Compared to nurses in the US, they make about $20,000 less per year.
It's also happening in Toronto, ON Canada. I was surviving on per diem and contract work for years before I finally left the profession for a career with more stability that provides a better life. The trends towards per diem/casual and short-term contract employment opportunities means many nurses hare living paycheque to paycheque with no health benefits. I know many other Canadian nurses who are struggling. Gone are the days of a Full-Time career with health benefits and a pension plan.
Many hospitals, clinics, and educational institutions hire staff on a contract/per diem basis only. It's pretty horrible. Scroll through the job boards of any hospital or college/university website and the trend will be glaringly obvious, ex. 6-month contract requires +++ years of experience and a MScN. It's looney.
