Emigrating to the UK

Hello All!

I'm planning on coming to the UK in August or September to work as a nurse. I'm currently in the US Navy working as an RN. I am considering London, but haven't seen too many positive posts! I'd like to be near a major city and universities so my wife and I can take classes. I'm working with a placement agency (OEM) right now and will be visiting London in June. Any idea or suggestions on where to work and such?

My sis is also planning to work in London, and she is looking for a placement agency. What is EOM?

Kaylesh here.. Im a US born and trained RN.. came here to the UK in 1999.. However Im up in Scotland about a half hour outside Edinburgh. Scotland major city.. So Im afraid I don't know much at all about working/living in or near London other than i know its one of the MOST EXPENSIVE areas to work and live. Just wanted to welcome you to the board.. and remember you still have to keep up your US RN liscense and also you need to become licensed with the UK's licensing agency the Nursing Midwifery Council.. aka NMC....

You have to have your NMC license before you will be allowed to work anywhere in the UK . So hopefully the placement agency you are using is helping to deal with that as well as the work permit...which again has to be in place before you can work here in the UK.. That is of course assuming you don't have UK citizenship.

There is a great website for US to UK folks full of all kinds of info on moving to the UK .. from work to pets to driving all kinds of info.. The site addy is http://www.americanexpats.co.uk You and your wife might find it helpful to post in there as well..

I have never regreted my decision to come to the UK.. Do be prepared RNs make a heck of a lot less here which can be a reality shock if your not prepared for it. .. Especially in NHS hopsitals.. Again welcome to site..

Thank you so much Kaylesh, the site you gave had a link where you can buy US foods!!!!! I love Lucky Charms which are no longer sold in the UK, so I usualy try and get people to bring me a box back when they are on hoiliday:)

Welcome to the site, there a lot of big cities outside of the South of Enlgand, Manchester and Leeds for example. I prefer the North of England... but that is a cultural thing! What kind of things do you want from an area besides a university?

Thanks for the reply Kaylesh! My wife and I were just talking about Edinburgh! We're talking about there now since I've heard some good things about it. I'm waiting to see what some other people post before I narrow down my search.

OEM is a placement agency for the UK and Ireland. They've been very helpful so far, but I might go for Scotland and I'm not sure if they place there or not.

I live in the north and prefer it. It is cheaper with alot of things than in the south, house rental/buy etc. There are alot of good universities up here Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds to mention a couple and Leeds have excellent Teaching hospitals. If you check out http://www.nmc-uk.org they will be information on nursing requirements for the UK.

Not to brag, but Edinburgh has three universities of its own to choose from! the major drawback is the prevailing cold East wind!

Have to admit I do love being near Edinburgh.. Sooo much to see and do..

Ahhh the winds are nothing compared to where i lived before being here in Dunfermline area...

Try the cold North Sea winds.. now that is bloody freezing.. I used to live in Aberdeen .. :-)
