i know some of us have received our letters so i was wondering who else i will be making this journey with for the next 2 years.
my name is allison shaffer and it's nice to meet you. i know we will all be close because it's a small group. it would be nice to get to know some of you before november 17. :)
I love hearing/reading your stories. How exciting for you.
I do everything at Parkland except the 2day pedi rotation.I loved being in surgery. There were 3 C-sections on our floor yesterday and I wanted to see all of them but I had to be nice and give my classmates a chance to observe surgery.

During my C-section there was a medical student in the OR, too and she must have been there for the first time because the tech. had to teach her how to scrub in. It was a small OR and we had an anesthetist, 2 surgeons, a baby NP, circulator, surg. tech, a med. student and me in the room. I was lucky to see the surgery.
I was fine during the anesthesia and surgery but one of my classmate got dizzy when the anesthetist tried to put in a spinal using a very long needle. She just sat down for a few minutes. She said she didn't eat anything that day and that hit her. I would love to go back to the OR next week but we are scheduled for newborn nursery. By the way I had lunch with some ECC students yesterday at Parkland and they were very nice and friendly. :)

I would love to have been at Parkland for all of this. They deliver the most babies in the COUNTRY! I really wish I would have chosen that hospital for this semester. I'm glad you are getting that wonderful experience, Katie! I go to Nursery and L&D on my last two days of clinical. I am SO excited! I've been on booooooooooooooring medsurg for the past couple of times. I'm sure it was far more exciting at Parkland for medsurg also.
Do you know who the ECC people were? I know a couple of people at Parkland rotation. See, we're nice people! haha
I found this poem by Toby Bressler, a senior at Kingsborough Comm. College in Brooklyn, NY and I thought it was neat so I thought I would share:
A successful career, family to rear
Aspirations left behind in my younger years,
My dreams had been preserved, reserved and for
the most part interred,
College silently beckoned,
With its force I dare not reckon,
No longer could I be coerced,
I must follow my dream and become a nurse!
My life as I knew it was about to be reversed,
Applications, information with registration I was immersed.
The schoolwork, the reading, my brainwaves suddenly
traveling transverse,
Exultantly studying to be a student nurse!
The nonstop action, self satisfaction,
Assisting patients in a holistic fashion.
Observing life at its best and worst,
There's nothing like being a student nurse!
In the hospitals, clinics, or hallowed hallways of college,
I am most grateful and do acknowledge,
That with each valuable lesson revealed,
I am extremely well educated in my chosen field,
I never imagined my aspiration would come first,
To accomplish my dream and become a nurse!

They were Tony and Rose. I haven't had my medsurg yet. But it's coming up soon.Katie
Aww, my Rose and Tony. They are the funniest people! I love them! I'm glad you got to meet them!!
I hope you enjoy medsurg as I'm sure it's better at Parkland. There just wasn't much going on at Charlton when I was there so it wasn't as interesting. I'm sure Parkland is non-stop! I hope you enjoy it
