I can say my micro-cassette tape recorder pretty much sucked in the BHC lecture hall. lol Of course, it was probably a cheap one anyway.

Your best bet is to sit as close to the bottom of the hall as possible!!!! (I sat on the 2nd row..about in the middle for Micro.)

As far as laptops...if you think you want one, buy one that has the qualities you like & can afford. Most new ones now days should do.

PDA.....I have a Pocket PC (HP), but I know some that have Palm. Either is ok. Just make sure that you have a good-sized storage card(I bought one from Ebay.), and a user-replaceable battery. (Some internal storage is a good thing as well!)

As far as programs, there are so many free ones out there....do a search on AllNurses for threads pertaining to PDAs. :)

Good luck!

Katie,

Good luck on HESI and don't get lost down there! LOL

Hello everyone,

I have posted her a couple of times so you may/may not recognize me. I am starting at BHC next month and I am getting so excited.

I am trying to pick up a few things to make NS a little easier and I have totally appreciated all the "wish lists" and advise that I have seen in your posts.

HERE IS MY QUESTION...can anyone recomend a laptop, PDA, voice recorder, etc. that is cohesive to NS? One concern that I have on the voice recorder is... if my lecture is in a large lecture hall (I don't know yet), I want a recorder that will have clear playback.

OR, if there is a brand/model to stay away from.

I love the support and friendship that y'all have for each other and I hope that BHC NS will be just as awesome as you!

Good luck on those HESI's!!!

Hey Toni -

I've got a Sony digital recorder that holds like 30 hours or something. I used it at UTD in the big halls, and to get clear recordings, i just put it up by the podium. It's been really helpful to me. You know I've got my fujitsu laptop, but my toshiba was really good too. I'll talk to you later!

A digital with plenty hours would be so much better.

The lecture hall at BHC where my Micro lecture was was extremely loud because of the A/C going on and off!

thanks to everyone for your input on the technical devices!

what is the concensus on whether or not a laptop or pda is necessary? anyone out there that is doing without, wishing they weren't? anyone using laptops and pda's that think they are absolute life savers?

kathy, i know you will take your laptop to your grave....he he!

to spend or not to spend????? as if i didn't already have enough to ponder!

You're right, I'll be buried with my laptop by my side...lol. I can't imagine passing lecture classes without it. But, that's only because I type faster than I can write. On the computer, I think it comes down to how much you personally would use it. For me, it helps me keep things organized, I can access e-campus anytime, all my schedule, notes, documents, and now books (for the nursing program) are on it. I prefer typing to writing - so, for me it's a must have. If you aren't used to using it to that degree though, it may not be as helpful. Will you guys have the books on disk for the nursing program, or have a "book box" like El Centro?

hey kathy,

i think a laptop will be a must for me...i used to be a typesetter at an advertising agency, so i like typing better too.

i have no idea what our book situation is at bhc; i would love to have the books on cd though (that just makes too much sense!). i just got through calling the nursing department bcuz we still have not received any info on our orientation/books/etc. anne said that she is not sure if they will do "book boxes" or just give us the list, since a lot of students like to find their books cheaper on-line or from other students. i asked about scrubs/steths/etc. and she said that they will probably put a kit together for that. she said that our orientation will probably be later into the spring. right now they are just trying to get all the current students taken care of and their pinning ceremony is tommorow. even though i want to know all these answers, it's nice to know that they are taking care of the troops...

noone has enrolled for any of our classes yet because we have been told that they will either auto-enroll us or tell us when to enroll. i guess things are a little wierd bcuz we are a "pilot" class. this is where patience becomes a virtue. :lol2:

my husband is wanting to buy stuff for christmas gifts and since i don't know what i need yet. i guess he is stuck buying the little stuff.:icon_wink:

give me a call so we can meet up and catch up.

Oh heck.....have him buy the laptop, PDA, Digital recorder, Danskos, ....leave the little stuff for someone else.

If a laptop will really help you, then just look for the features you want, and make sure you've got plenty of speed and memory. I don't really use any special software - just office. Having the books on CD will really save my back from carrying all those books! Hopefully they won't keep you guys in the dark for too long. I'll holler at you so we can get together, but it will probably be after Christmas. Things are so chaotic right now! I will talk to you later...Take care!
