Hey guys, I just signed up for Info Lit through Penn Foster. I just wanted to put it out there that it is an option (easily approved by EC) and ALOT cheaper. Ill post the Information that Ive posted on another site below:
*First, get it approved by your EC advisor before you register.
*Contact Penn Foster College--your contact is Mary Beth at 1-800-233-0259 x 4016. She'll give you all the info you need. You will enroll in Eng 103-Info Literacy which is 1 credit and they charge $90/credit (no other fees involved--enrollment or proctor fees).
I signed up yesterday afternoon and received an email with my Login about a half hour ago. After logging in you can access your "Study Unit", which is a 116 page PDF file. This includes the study material plus 8 'Self-checks'. Honestly, I dont even think its worth printing out or having them send you a 'Book', you can just read it on the computer, but hey its in the mail already.
The "Exam" is 4 pages and 20 questions long, and you also do a "Info Lit. Graded Project" which is also 4 pages and 20 questions long where you access the Penn Foster Library site and find the answers.
In response to the submission of the exam and project--It states:
"When you feel confident that you have mastered the material in
this study unit, go to http://www.takeexamsonline.com and submit
your answers online. If you don't have access to the Internet,
you can phone in or mail in your exam. Submit your answers for
this examination as soon as you complete it. Do not wait until
another examination is ready." So yes, you can do it online at home OR you can mail/phone it in."
Just by skimming through I dont see that this will take me more than an hour or 2 to complete. So DEFINITELY a great alternative and easily approved by EC.
Hope this will help those of you who find EC as financially draining as I do. Good luck!

Thanks for posting this, Felicia! I know someone else (Erin?) had this approved by EC a while back, but never heard the final outcome. Glad to hear this works! I've long since taken Info Lit and shelled out my $$$, but hopefully others can save a little. Does the course come with a letter grade, or is it pass/fail?
Im honestly not sure yet. I would imagine a letter grade because of the fact that the questions are multiple choice on the Exam and "Project" but who knows. I will post back once I finish it. Im taking Repro next Saturday so Im trying to not get distracted, as much as I want to knock this course out YESTERDAY. Another good thing is that you dont have to print out the info, they send you a book, OR you can access the PDF file and really can just read it on the computer screen. The exam is the last 8 pages of the PDF file so you can answer the questions as you read. Ive heard MANY people complain of the wasted paper from Info Lit. Glad I dont have to--after I hear all the paper used to print the Carjack...or whatever its called.

Hi fellow students, this is my first post but I've been a member for a couple of months now. just to add my on Penn Foster's course since I just completed it. Its just as easy as you mentioned. I pd $90 which included the study guide & exam in the back. I never read a pg, I looked up the ans only. It took about 1 hr for both exams, I ended up w/a 90, they avg the 2 exams, which is a B by Penn Foster's standards but an A in my book, digressing!, I called Marybeth afterwards & she sends your official transcript to Excelsior @ n/c & a copy to you. I had approval so once Excelsior gets it, thats it!
Submitted my Exam and Graded Assignment tonight--it only took me about 2 hours to do both. I got 95% on the Graded Assignment and 100% on the Final Exam. It took a little bit of digging--PM me for some pointers if youre going to take this course--but wasnt all that bad. That stinky little credit is officially out of the way. Good luck to all who decide to take this course.
thanks felicia, i would like the extra pointers, but havent figured out how send a pm yet?-christy
Christy-
You cant PM until you have posted 15 times. I will send you a PM with my email--that will send you an email and you should be able to click on it to get to your PMs or Go under the MyAccount section (next to where is says Welcome, and your name) and you can get there.
felicia, i got it-thank you,christy

Hi Felicia,
Thank you so much for the offer of pointers. I recently received my info from Penn State; thanks to you for alerting us and saving us $$$$. I will also need some pointers on how to go about dealing with it faster as I am sheduled to take another concepts exam next month. Again, many thanks.
Youre very welcome. I finished mine in only a few hours. Alot of the questions I just used the 'Find' feature in the PDF file and it showed me where the section on that specific question was. Also with the ones that you had to "research" on certain sites. I simply put the question into a Yahoo search and found the answers that way. Good luck!
