EC Background check

I was Just curious if anyone knows how strict EC background checks are. Not that I am a criminal or anything, My brother-in-law(who is now incarcerated)stole some checks from my husband and I and forged my signature and caused several checks to bounce( like 8 years ago). Like an idiot, hoping he would straighten out didn't press charges. I ended up on probation until they were paid because the checks had already gone to State's attorney. To make a long story short, did probation and paid everything and all is clear now and has been for years, I just am hoping that something stuphid like this will not keep me from furthering my education.

I never heard about EC background checks until now. I've received my application for CPNE but not the carjack yet.

On reading this thread I did a search on the EC website for background checks and found this:

https://www.excelsior.edu/portal/page?_pageid=57,228896&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

This confuses me as it is the first time I've heard of it and I had to go looking for it. I don't have a problem with it being required, but seems it would have been brought up before if it meant you had to have the check done before the CPNE. It shouldn't be information you have to go looking for. I am wondering what "clinical experiences" they are referring to? It would make sense they are talking about the CPNE and other such type exams but again why wouldn't this be common knowledge? Is it in the carjack? Because it's not on the list of things you have to submit to take your CPNE on the application they send! And if it is required then it would definitely have to be mentioned there.

This is a new requirement for those taking the CPNE this fall October 1, I think. I went to the workshop in Memphis a few weeks ago and the talked about this change and some others. People testing after October will also have to aspirate with IV push station and the carjack will be trimmed down to approximately 350 pages. They alluded to other changes, but did not specify. I agree that the information you found on the EC website sounds interesting, maybe changes to the CPNE are on the way. Maybe the recent developments in several states regarding clinical hours is forcing some changes. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Even if I send in my application today (and I'd like to but there's this money thing) I'm unlikely to get a date before October 1. Where I want to test, maybe the end of October if I'm lucky (I keep hearing a 4 month wait for NY sites).

I wonder if this means that I study whatever they send me now then have to request an updated carjack once I have a date? Hmmmm. Time indeed to make some phone calls.

Laurie,

I have an October date for the NY site. I sent my application in back in April. Of those I've talked to lately it seems the wait is about 6 months everywhere except CA, which is longer.

Thanks -- I think since Betsy left the CPNE message board on Excelsior hasn't had updates for timeframes. I know through the early part of the year it was still 4 months for the NY and Ohio sites. A couple extra months won't hurt me at all, I just need to anticipate. Especially since there will be changes October 1 having a little extra time to learn the changes will help.

But knowing this gives me even more reason why i want to hurry up and get my application in. It'd be really nice to actually be done by the end of the year, graduate by my 49th birthday (February).

I think they will automatically send you a new study guide when it becomes available. I would certainly hold on to the big one they are currently sending out. They can't possibly get the same info into less than half of the pages. Maybe they are planning to sell a seperate guided learning package that will have the detailed info that the current study guide has? I also suspect the wait times have gotten longer, at the end of April NY was scheduling for September, so the wait was 5 months at that time, I don't think it has gotten any better. Also, you don't have to send all of the money with your application, you only need to send $500 and then the rest needs to be in 3 weeks before your test date. This is also true of most of the paperwork, cpr, health status report and photo.

I know you don't have to have the whole amount, it's the $500 I don't have and hate to borrow prematurely. I have to wait three weeks to find out about the scholarship and do have other options, but all these options will cost me time. Every time I turn around there's another delay! If I don't get the scholarship I will just ask the hospital to grant me an exception to the regular tuition reimbursement and offer a time payback, it's not like I plan to work anywhere else. But that will be another wait and see... worth it I'm sure since I don't have the funds. And I absolutely need to attend a workshop.

As far as the carjack, they just send out the updates when they come, they don't even know for sure what they will be right now (according to the advisor I spoke to today). Apparently the background check is one of them so maybe I'll go ahead anyway and get that done. I received my application almost a week ago -- if I hadn't called today I probably wouldn't even have received the carjack. Apparently since I had out of curiousity at one point requested the updates on the 11th edition they assumed I had one or something. So now I get to wait another week anyway. Must be some 'reason' that I'm not supposed to get it all done too soon!

I am having a slow night here, just got home from doing a double,,what are you all refferring to,talking about ''EC'',back ground check & ''Carjacking'' ??

Hope this doesn't sound like a weird question.

Time to go soak my feet now,,thanks for the info all!!

Nurse Elsie**

"EC" is Excelsior College

The carjack is the huge (scale-busting, could hold a car up it's so big and hefty) study guide for the CPNE. CPNE is the clinical performance nursing examination - the "capstone" course for the distance nursing program at Excelsior.

I'm sceduled to take the CPNE September 23 so I guess I won't be lucky enough to get a 350 page carjack, I'll have to keep this 1000 page one...geez.

For what it's worth, I think you are better off with the 1000 page one. I know it seems daunting, but it's better to have as much info as you can get for this thing. Section 4 is your best friend:)
