EC Background check

I was Just curious if anyone knows how strict EC background checks are. Not that I am a criminal or anything, My brother-in-law(who is now incarcerated)stole some checks from my husband and I and forged my signature and caused several checks to bounce( like 8 years ago). Like an idiot, hoping he would straighten out didn't press charges. I ended up on probation until they were paid because the checks had already gone to State's attorney. To make a long story short, did probation and paid everything and all is clear now and has been for years, I just am hoping that something stuphid like this will not keep me from furthering my education.

EC itself doesn't do background checks. They do advise students that have criminal convictions that they may not be eligible to take the NCLEX. You should call your state board of nursing and ask them about your particular situation. They may have you produce documentation detailing the charges and terms of probation, and that it was successfully completed. Most boards seem to be pretty reasonable about this kind of thing. It seems doubtful that they would prevent somebody from taking boards for an offense like you described.

Something else to consider, is that if you are using a 3rd party loan company to finance your EC education, they will probably run a credit check as well.

i read on the ec website yesterday that you have to have fingerprints/criminal clearance through the fbi before you can take your CPNE. they stated to go to a local police agency and get fingerprinted, and have the card sent to the fbi. the address and letter to do it are all on the ec website.

is this what you were referring to?

That is exactly what I was referring to. I have sent off for boards for my LPN but have not heard anything yet.

so are you waiting to take your LPN boards? or are you an LPN already? i'm having a not so good day and just smack me if i didn't read this correctly:chuckle

are you looking to enroll in EC soon? i have taken almost all my nursing classes, then i have to finsih up some general eds and hopefully next spring be done. that's my goal anyway! good luck to you! :balloons:

I am waiting to take boards for my LPN, I graduated in Dec. I had put a question on the NCLEX forum about my situation. Our school never mentioned anything about the background checks and I found out about it when I went to apply to take boards, I just haven't heard anything from them yet, so I was worried about BON not letting me take my test. I am enrolling in EC for my RN and can take gen ed. until I have my license, but on EC website it also mentions the background check. I am so worried that something so stuphid from so long ago may have come back to haunt me. :uhoh3:

The following only applies if you did not tell the board about your criminal background when applying for LPN eligibility for testing:

You need to contact the board before they contact you. Where most boards of nursing are pretty reasonable, they will not be so reasonable if an application for licensure is turned in that doesn't detail the background. Did you have this information included in your LPN application?? If not, contact the board first thing Monday morning, and tell them that you just didn't know that you were supposed to notify them. Jump through any and all hoops they give you. Otherwise, they could deny you licensure, or take away licensure down the road if they audit your license.

Thanks for the information. How do you know all this stuff? You don't happen to work for the BON do ya? I just don't understand why the school I graduated from didn't say anything about all this.

Never worked for the board, but I've worked as an instructor, and as such had to deal with this issue a couple of times. It's unfortunate your school didn't walk you through this process. At our school it's brought up on the first day, and anyone that has even a thought that they might have something on their record is encouraged to contact the board during their first semester - to get a provisional ruling on eligibility.

i am interested in pursuing nursing but i too served probation but for criminal mischief i finished probation and was never convicted of a crime it was deffered probation ...i dont want to start taking nursing classes to find out i cant even be a nurse due to this mistake i made in my teens. can anyone please help?!?

You need to contact the Board of Nursing for your state. They are the only ones that can make a determination for your case. I suggest that you speak to them first before starting any program. It is best to have yourself covered.

Most important question, has the BON given you permission to be able to sit for the LPN boards. I would get thru this step first. If they do, then you should be fine for the RN, but if they don't, why pay for the extra schooling..

The BON is the only one that can make a decision on your behalf, not us, nor even any attorney. The BON has final say over licensure. Period. Best suggestion is to contact them.
