Duke 2014 Nurse Residency Program

Hello everyone,

I decided to start a thread for the Duke University Hospital residency program.

I'm also looking for some advice as well. I'm not 100% sure of the application process, (maybe I'm thinking about other program I've applied to) but I remember being able select our 1st and 2nd choice. I'm pretty sure if this is the case that I selected pediatrics.

Well I just received an email form Duke to interview for the Clinical Transport Team. I'm thrilled to have gotten an interview, but does this mean my application was never forwarded to my choices?

Is anyone else in the same boat?

Thank you, @Bos12, for starting this thread! When I applied, I was able to select 2 choices-- 1st was critical care, and 2nd was cardiology stepdown for me. That's odd you didn't get either of your choices... I didn't even know Clinical Transport Team was an option. Maybe try asking the recruiter about how she made the decision to place you there?

I just received an e-mail today to interview for Duke Hospital's Neurosurgery ICU! My first hospital interview!! Apparently it's an interview followed by a 1-2 hour shadow/observation experience with a nurse. Is this how Duke conducts all its interviews, or just certain units? And does anyone have any experience with a shadowing interview like this?

Hi :) I received an interview for their Surgery ICU on 6West.

@ConzRN Clinical Transport Team was not an option. But they are accepting new grads so my resume was forwarded there. Still not sure why, but I sent an email asking earlier today.

I've been wondering the same thing with the interviews. I set up mine today and was told the first two hours will be shadowing followed by a 1 hour interview.

Good luck! Where are you guys traveling from?

Does anyone remember how long the residency program is? And as long as we have licensure before the start date, we're good, right? :) Just checking minor details.. I was unable to go back and look at the job listing, even when I logged into my account. Thanks.

By the way, I am also shadowing for my interview -- interview first, then shadowing. No idea what to expect!

I applied too, and have an interview next week. I'll be doing the 2 hours of shadowing followed by a 1 hour interview, like a few of you have mentioned. I'm so nervous!! I want this so much, and it's always stressful not knowing what to expect.

Does anybody know if we just wear our scrubs for the interview, since they are required for the shadowing? Or are we supposed to bring a business outfit to change into?

Thanks! Good luck to you too! I'm traveling all the way from Southern California. How about you?

@maomao429 I e-mailed HR for more information about the residency when I was first applying, and they told me it was 12 months long. I believe as long as you have your license by the start date you should be okay!

I actually already have a CA license but I have no idea how long the process would be to get a license to practice in NC. It's a compact state, right? So I would be applying for a multistate license? Not sure how it all works.

You can ask the recruiter to be 100% sure, but I heard from the "Duke Interview" allnurses thread (you guys should read it, I found it to be really helpful in terms of interview questions and the whole process) that you're supposed to show up wearing scrubs. Apparently you really don't have time to change clothes because someone takes you straight from the interview to the shadowing, or vice versa. Plus it might be a little awkward to have that person wait for you while you change in the bathroom...

Anyway, good luck on your interview next week!! What unit are you interviewing for?

I'm graduating this May and then taking my NCLEX, so I'm not entirely sure! But I'm coming from San Francisco. My interview is on 4/3. :)

I will definitely ask the recruiter on Monday, but it sounds like it would be best to just wear the scrubs the entire time! I read the "Duke Interview" thread too, very helpful!!

Good luck to you too!! I'm coming from Colorado, but I'm pretty familiar with the Raleigh/Durham area...It's definitely a place I want to live in! Will be interviewing for the Intensive Care Nursery, which was my first choice. I graduated in May 2013, so I'm more than ready to start working!
