Duke Nurse Residency 2016! (feb 28th apps)

Published

Hey all!!!

Just want to make a forum for the Duke Nurse Residency Program. Applications are open now, and will close Feb 28th 2016.

Good luck to all! And keep us posted here!!

I sent in my app, and it has changed to "forwarded to hiring manager". Has anyone else had that change?

Hi guys, congrats to everyone who has heard already! I'm coming from NYC and I applied super late for the feb 28th app (like 2 or 3 days before the closing date), but then applied for the one they posted next for march 31st right away, so I'm not sure if they have already moved onto reading March apps or still are working on the Feb deadline ones. just wondering for people who got interviews, did you do anything to follow up after submitting the application like call HR or anything? Also, if I apply multiple times do you think that keeping the same 2 specialty choices is a good idea? Any advice is appreciated!!

Hi leh399,

I would call HR and talk to them as they are very friendly and helpful! I don't think you need to apply multiple times. I look at it as being similar to a college acceptance...would you apply to the same college multiple times for the same year? Just my thoughts!

Good luck!

Hey!

You must be pumped! I won't be there until March 29th and I am hopeful that I will start on April 4th (as long as my NC license comes through). May I ask where you are living? Not to be creepy I just am trying to get the lay of the land.

Hope you had a great flight!

Hi! Congrats!!! To start, I am staying with family in Raleigh. I want to take my time finding a place, but I am set on staying in Cary. My aunt says that's where all the transplants move to. It's very nice, safe, and close to Durham. I'm so excited for you! :)

Flying into Raleigh today from the west coast! I have my interviews tomorrow for surgery ICU and neuro ICU, these are my first in person interviews EVER....

That's AWESOME! I see a lot of people interviewing on here for neuro ICU! Make sure you do your research on behavioral interview based questions. I was very over prepared but I hear SICU asks a lot more difficult questions. Some questions I got were:

Where do you see yourself in 5 years

Why do you want to work with pediatrics (interviewed in a pediatric ICU, but I can see this as being a why do you want to work in the intensive care unit also)

Who is a person (mentor/clinical instructor/someone you look up to) and why?

Tell me about something you've had to change to better yourself? (I also see this as what is your biggest weakness/worst trait and how did you overcome it)

And there were a couple others that I just went completely blank on lol! I was all ready to answer scenarios and "tell me a time when" type questions because you never know! Good luck!

I drove through Cary, went to the Super Target in Apex, traveled around Chapel Hill, and saw some of the Briarcreek areas and I THOUGHT I liked Cary and Chapel Hill the best but now I'm torn between both of them. Chapel Hill had a nice back way into Duke where you can avoid all the traffic on the freeway but I wonder if it'll make that big of a difference with nurses who go in before traffic @ 530am and leave after traffic around 630p or 7. 🤔

Fingers crossed for you futureRN17!!

Thank you!!!! [emoji16] I'm remaining hopeful! My recruiter has been out of the office since YESTERDAY! So my two weeks is slowly approaching and haven't heard a word! But no news isn't necessarily bad news I guess! I don't graduate until May & won't begin work officially until after NCLEX in July so they probably assume there's no rush for me [emoji23]

Oh wow! Thank you so much! I have some practicing to do tonight!

Ok...good to know and thanks for the congrats! I think I found a place really close to Duke, that I actually like! (Shocking!) I like that I have the option to do a 6 month lease too. We shall see but I will absolutely check out Cary too.

Im so excited to finally begin my nursing career! We should all meet up for celebratory cocktails when we get settled in. Am I allowed to give you my email on here or do you think I will be hacked to oblivion?!

Thanks for all the advise!

Did anyone hear anything after the first open house?

Kdeeds,

Another west coaster! Any news after the interview!?

Hi everyone! I was invited to interview for the neuro-step down unit. It is the same open house (interview & shadow) everyone has been talking about. I am wondering if people who interviewed for multiple units were told right away if they had multiple units they were being offered or if they just received separate e-mails for them? I am also wondering how serious these interviews actually are. I guess I am nervous about flying somewhere if I have a ton of competition (not trying to sound negative)... Any advice would be great! Thanks
