DUKE DNP/MSN Spring 2018

Published

I was just wondering if anyone has applied to Duke for one of their graduate programs for Spring of 2018? I chose to go the BSN-DNP w/ FNP track route. Now I am patiently waiting for applications to close and interviews to go out. I would love to connect with other students who are applying! Also I would love to hear feedback from any current or past students. Thanks!

Congrats on your acceptance!!! When did they notify you that you were accepted? When did you have your interview?

Thank you! It was SUCH a stressful process, so I'm right there with you! lol But the deadline was Dec 1 and I received an email Feb 9 informing me that I was selected for an interview, so it was an agonizing 2 months later. I scheduled my interview via Zoom, which is the equivalent to skype. My interview was Feb 23 and was literally an hour long. I was fortunate enough to be interviewed by the director of my program. The questions weren't awful but they definitely caused me to REALLY dig deep. A few of them included "When was a time that you received a criticism and how did you handle that criticism? When was a time that you made a mistake and how did you approach the mistake? Who did you tell about the mistake? Name 3 adjectives to describe yourself and why? Why do you want to obtain the DNP? Do you have any experience with process improvement? If so, what was the project? When was a time that you had a difficult interaction with patient and/or patient family member and how did you approach that situation?" The interview flowed naturally just like a conversation. Although the actual application was A BEAST in my opinion, I'm thankful for it in that I could fire out great answers effortlessly due to the fact that I elaborated in such great detail in application essays. When was your deadline?

We applied for spring of 2018, deadline for that was May 1st. December 1st deadline was for fall 2017. Are you starting for fall or starting in the spring because you rolled over your application and was wait listed? I know some people who werent accepted for fall I heard got to roll their app over for spring. Was that your situation? Everyone that interviewed for the spring session had zoom interviews, we didn't have an option of in person interviews.

I also interviewed last month for the FNP and did not realize they were still interviewing. Do you think they will still tell us next week if they are currently interviewing? Also, that email yesterday looked promising until I read the whole thing, ha!

I'm crossing my fingers! lol I'm hoping we know before the end of the month bc that's gonna be short notice otherwise :/

That's great that some people you know are going to be able to start that following semester. Fortunately I wasn't wait-listed. I applied for the Fall 2017 semester and will be starting this Fall.

I found out about my acceptance about a full month after my interview. And my situation was unique in that I initially got a rejection letter! After licking my wounds I reached out to the Professor who interviewed me and she stated how she recommended me for the program, so she was completely dumbfounded as to why I received that rejection letter. She then told me she would touch base with the Director of Admissions and followup with me, this happened on a Friday. So that next Monday the Director of Admissions called me himself and explained he had NO idea how I received that rejection letter. He apologized profusely for the mixup and told me that I been accepted into the MSN program and to check the decision page that next day to see if I had gotten into the DNP program. I checked back that next day as instructed and I had an acceptance letter.

I said all this to say don't feel discouraged if you see a rejection letter. Their system is in the process of a major makeover and anything can be a fluke! If I hadn't have followed up wit the Prof who interviewed me, the mistake would not have been corrected and I wouldn't have known as I was accepted!! Keep the faith!

Thank you for telling us your stories and for your words of encouragement! I'm so excited for you, I hope in January of next Year to be in your shoes! I wasn't sure if you were starting spring or this fall haha that's why I was a bit confused about your timelines mentioned in your previous post. It seemed as though you sounded like you were starting with the spring group haha, my apologies for misunderstanding. Best of luck to you and please come back and let us know how the first semester is going!

Completed my interview on the 8/11 for MSN/FNP...went well! Looks like they are still interviewing folks to the 16th. Just trying to share information..I know it is a stressful process waiting for everyone. I also received the "save the date" email for orientation at the same time they sent the link for the interview.

Congrats! Did they say anything about letting us know about their decisions since they're interviewing up until the 16th?

I find it hard to believe we would get our decisions August 18th like they originally said if they are still interviewing...hmm I guess time will tell!

I didn't ask....because for me...I'm like..I don't care..just let me know...but the interviewer said at the beginning of the interview that she had been told Aug 18th was the notification date...but that seemed soon to her so don't be surprised if it was later. At the end of the interview she said maybe it could be in the next week or so..I said obviously it has to be before September 8th if they want me to show up for welcome event dressed well!!! She laughed...It will be soon i'm sure..Good luck everyone.
