Anyone else applying to Duke's ABSN program for Spring 2015? As we're approaching the application deadline, I thought it would be great to get a conversation started. If anyone is currently in the program, I would love to hear your thoughts about the program as well.

Hi skat12, I am applying for Spring 2015. I had previously applied for Fall 2014 but I was waitlisted but I applied for this semester early so now I am waiting. I read from previous threads that it's a great program.

I have applied!

Anyone know what "good" GRE scores are? Duke has told me "top fiftieth percentile" but what does that mean regarding actual scores per section?

Not sure if I needed it, so I signed up to take it (nice $180 out of my pocket that I'm unsure I even needed) per Duke's urging; I am still waiting to see the accumulation of my scores and if a "percentile rank" is listed with it. This gave me LITTLE time to study and one time to get that score they're looking for. I hope that if I missed it by a few points, due to the time crunch and lack of studying, that Duke will let me retake it and submit my new scores after that June 1 deadline. Most GRE-takers typically take it two-three times before they settle with their score.

My sister is applying. You only have to take the GRE if your GPA is below 3.4!

My sister is applying. You only have to take the GRE if your GPA is below 3.4!

You must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.4 or higher, and if you're like me, having attended multiple universities and studied abroad, you'll find your GPA is not so cut and dry. Quite a difference vs overall GPA. I've done very well in my pre-requisite classes I took after obtaining my first degree, though that will not be factored into that GPA they're looking at; nevertheless, those grades DO matter and will be highly considered in the overall specs.

Unfortunately Duke's ABSN faculty has done this thing where they urge you to submit your ABSN application early so they can review it to let you know what your GPA is and thus if you need to take the GRE. They say if you THINK you're borderline with your GPA, to go ahead and take the GRE. My only qualms with that? The GRE takes MONTHS to fully prepare for and it's $180 each time, with most students taking it twice. That's a lot of time and money lost, ontop of stress, if you didn't need to take it in the first place.

Does Duke accept GRE scores submitted after the June 1 application deadline or is Duke like Carolina in that EVERYTHING in consideration must be submitted by June 1? If counselors aren't getting back to students until, let's randomly say May 25, do they really expect the student to have taken/to sign up to take the test by May 31? The scores will still not be available to Duke until 2 weeks after that...

I had applied to UNC's BSN May 2014 program, had applied by the December 2014 deadline and e-mailed them in February, as instructed to do so, with additional information concerning employment and research, which was critical to my application and not just miscellaneous. Come to find out this information submitted was NOT brought forth amongst committee members, as everything must be received at the application deadline. Which, in my case, was impossible since I had only gotten the job and independent study a month later...

Hey everyone. I applied but not sure all my things will make it on time. I emailed them and she said "Thank you for your interest in the Duke University School of Nursing. You may still apply for Spring 2015. Our ABSN program is still accepting applications, at this time. But you should send all your materials to us now". This was on May 30th. So I am not sure if she was saying.. hey, you still have 2 days left OR we dont plan to close on June 1st. What do you think? I emailed them back to ask lol

Since your application has been started, I believe the deadline to submit the application has been extended until June 13th. If supporting documents are received by Duke no later than June 20th, your application will be reviewed. Good luck!

Anixon,

I'm not sure. However, I know that there have been some changes made to the application process. From what I understand, there will be no interviews. You will be invited to Duke Days if you are admitted to the program. I'm excited about admission decisions!

Skat12

Yeah, I am excited about that too. I got an email from the explaining, kinda. Although I am a bit worried how I did on my essays and I assume I cant change then since I have submitted my app already lol I feel like I really didnt answer their questions on some of them. Oh well.... it will be what it will be. Is Duke your only App? I am also considering a Respiratory Therapy program as well here in town. My friend is one and she makes the same amount of money as the RN's give or take. Plus def. less stressful. Still get the hands on patient care too. Plus, I have seen both in action since I work in a hospital and I have to say the RT's have a nice job! haha

Anixon,

Duke is my first choice. I've started a couple of other applications (George Washington and Georgetown), which are due in a couple of months. However, I am only applying to ABSN programs. Looking forward to keeping in touch during this process.

Skat, I look forward to it too. I have a started an application to Winston Salem State as well but you cant "apply" until August. I am not sure I want to attend there. Very disorganized. But it is closer to me. I have only been applying to ABSN programs as well.... I actually got into Texas Christian University in Texas however, we moved back to NC right before classes started in May. It was sad, but in a way I was relieved. Their program was $83,000 for 13 months :( Thats just crazy! I was lucky enough to have co-signers for my loan but ended up not doing it.

I am surprised their arent more people on here!
