DUKE ABSN Fall 2012

Published

Hi all!

Just wanted to start a thread for the people applying to duke for the fall of 2012. I am super excited/nervous to be filling out the application! I know that there are others out there feeling the same way. If anybody is willing to comment I would love to hear from some people who have applied, accepted or denied, or applying right now, or even going to apply in the future. :)

Hey everyone,

I was fortunate enough to get into Duke! I read the email from my phone while I was laying in bed and couldn't really believe it! I actually got into Johns Hopkins 13-month ABSN as well, so I have a big decision to make!

Is anyone else trying to decide between these, or other schools?

And good luck 2nd rounders! I know it's tough, but I know of at least a handful of people personally who have gotten into schools even 2 weeks before classes started. One of my close friends got into Georgetown 8 days before the first day of class!

Rosie, did you receive an acceptance to Simmons? I currently live and work in Boston and you're definitely right, the cost of living is more expensive and that was one of the reasons I did not apply to any schools in this area, even though there are some amazing nursing programs! HOWEVER, if you love a school you will somehow find a way to make the money work :)

And congrats ppuri! You should also be proud of getting accepted to Johns Hopkins, that is an amazing school with an amazing nursing program! That will be a tough decision, which school are you leaning towards?

I was actually accepted to Simmons at the end of July last year (2011) for the 18 month ABSN cohort that starts July 1 of this year, which was fine because it gave me time to finish up my prereqs. I've been living in Boston for almost a year and a half all ready, and I've realized I am definitely not the city girl I thought I was. So I started looking elsewhere and realized that Duke was the school I really wanted to go to.

Simmons actually has rolling admissions for their ABSN program (it's referred to as the Dix Scholars 18 month nursing program on their website), which is great because it doesn't put you into any major stress mode! Also, their application is free if you apply online, which is a nice little bonus. It's a great school with a great reputation right in the Longwood Medical Area, but I've lived in New England my entire life and I'm pretty much over the snow and the cold.

ok fellow second rounders....I wanted to share some encouragement. I sent a message to Infirmière Angiela who was on the waiting list last year; she got her acceptance in July. She sent back the most ENCOURAGING message. She loves the program and is doing really well. She encouraged us all to keep hanging on if we really want Duke. Wanted to pass it on to the rest of you!

for any of those accepted, are you moving from far away???

Would it be possible to post what she said?

jpw, your inbox is full again! :)

Rosie, I'm moving from far away (texas)!

This is super random but I just saw on Facebook that M created a group for accepted students (it's called Duke ABSN Fall 2012 Cohort). Just fyi! Thanks Facebook for rubbing it in, ha ha. The reason I can see the group is b/c one of my Facebook friends got in (don't think she writes on here) and got added to the group. So incredibly random. Happy stalking, y'all! ;)

:lol2:

It looks like its private though and not searchable through FB's search feature.

dang i totally wanted to stalk it! see how many already accepted! haha.

Thanks dancergirl185! :0) Honestly, I think I may be leaning toward JHUSON. The idea of the shorter program coupled with living in Baltimore is appealing to me. Both have amazing resources and wonderful faculty, so I am kind of torn in that way. I've saved up enough money to where that and some loans will be enough, so the cost isn't really factoring into my decision. Duke might be a better fit time-wise just because of the fact that it starts in Fall. The JHUSON program starts end of May... meaning I would be taking my last prereq finals on Friday and starting class in Baltimore on Monday. Oh, and did I mention that I am moving to Baltimore or Durham from Los Angeles ;0) Ha... that should be FUN!!!
