Hi all!
Just wanted to start a thread for the people applying to duke for the fall of 2012. I am super excited/nervous to be filling out the application! I know that there are others out there feeling the same way. If anybody is willing to comment I would love to hear from some people who have applied, accepted or denied, or applying right now, or even going to apply in the future. :)
Congrats, rosie! Second rounded here... dancergirl, I'm with you. #$!@!!!!Edited to add - guys, let's not give up. While I'm so upset that we're getting strung along for another billion years, it can work out. I recently met someone who got in literally 3-4 weeks before classes started. I'm going to write to that person and get some advice.
Moggsy, also try contacting Infirmiere (sp?) Angiela. She's a member on here who got off the waitlist in late July 2011! I couldn't bare the thought of what she and others may have went through waiting the entire summer for a final decision, but I guess for some Duke is worth the torture.
I'm praying for you guys!
Thanks, 2bEsq - I had forgotten about her! I am praying for UNC to come through at this point, but who knows what will happen. I can't think too far ahead because I start to panic, ha ha. I guess you just have to have faith that everything works out the way it's supposed to work out.
And I have a theory - I know that dancergirl, jpw4200, and I were all in the same group at Duke Days. I'm starting to think the admissions people definitely go into Duke Days pretty much knowing final decisions since we all got second rounded. Maybe there is more to the groups than we think. Thoughts? I did start to wonder because we didn't have any guys in our group (there were 5 or so at our day), and you know how nursing schools must love the male applicants...
Okay, the class has to be bigger than just rosie... LOL.(Cross-posted with mellzie) - I have no idea if they flat out reject anyone right away. I'm pretty sure we just hang on now until they release the waitlist in April. Then you decide if it's worth staying on it or not depending on what # you are. A ton of people on this board got second rounded last year, and a lot of people who got in ended up giving up their spots when they saw the $$ situation (i.e. ~100k in loans, if I'm remembering correctly from last year). It is a slow, painful process... at least we can keep each other company! :)
Yes, I do believe Duke sent rejection letters/emails so the fact that you and others are still in the game is definitely something to be cautiously optimistic about. :)
And yeah, it seems like those who were admitted to Duke decided to attend the likes of UNC solely on the basis of it being cheaper. The cost of Duke is a huge factor for most, even though I've convinced myself that its worth the cost. :)

Out of curiosity, do you know if UNC requires a seat deposit before the summer? I really hope all of you get a final answer by April/May (anytime before summer!)
Side note: have you considered writing a letter of continued interest (LOCI)? Or does the ranking on the waitlist determines who gets bumped up? How are rankings even determined?? I wonder if writing an LOCI can help influence the rankings?...Sigh.
I also think Duke is worth the cost, ha ha. I actually know very little about UNC's processes, but I assume they require some kind of deposit - I applied to the BSN which starts in May, so I don't have a lot of time either! We're supposed to get a letter in the mail from them around March 15th-ish.
I know people write letters of intent/LOCI to med schools if they're waitlisted... I'll probably just wait to hear something from UNC and then see how desperate I am!
Hello Everyone! This is actually my first post. I've been following everyone though. I got my acceptance letter for Duke this morning! I'm really excited. I am trying to decide if I want to go there or Medical University of South Carolina, though.
Good luck to everyone!
Welcome and congrats!!
And my vote is for Duke not only given the quality of its teaching but the vast options to explore advanced nursing practitioner degrees, tuition reimbursement programs and the ability to work within the Duke University Health System. The networking at Duke will carry you places, no doubt. :)
I found this on the Duke website for all the second rounders out there (including me!)...
"After the interviews are conducted, each student will receive a secondary review by the admissions committee for a final vote. Decisions at this time can be 1st Round admit, 2nd Round admission consideration, or deny. After the 2nd Round decisions are made, the School will publish a rated waitlist for those not offered admission. Admissions offers will be sent to waitlisted candidates on a space available basis. Waitlist offers are typically made no later than 30 days prior to the start of the term."

So what do second rounders do in the interim? Just wait? How are waitlist rankings even determined? What factors are considered?

After an entire night of very little sleep and a lot of anxiety dreams...I got in. And will be going!
Fingers crossed for all the second-rounders and anyone still waiting to hear.
