Drug Seekers- the Wrongfully Accused

For those that have gone to the ER with real pain and been dismissed, poorly treated and ignored. You will get refunded all your money, and the script of your choice personally from the idiot who figured that since you didn't fit into THEIR idea of pain, it couldn't be real. Also will be able to WHOMP them with their own baseball bat if they have one, "(WHOOMP) See how it feels, you moron?! Betcha want some good drugs now huh?!"

I once had an ER Doc show up to work and announced to all nursing staff that "No one is getting narcs tonight--on my shift". What a prick. There are some patients who are really in pain, such a renal stones, fractures, etc. One call to the Attending Doc took care of that. Nurses are pretty good at figuring out who needs real pain meds and who doesn't and it is ashamed not all docs listen to the staff! Just my thoughts........."on through the fog gang"

Hmm, the compassion just flows from some ppl...those practitioners should be removed from practice until they get the OP's 'whomp' treatment!

Our ED entrance has a sign in english and spanish that says, in big red letters, "DEMEROL FREE ZONE". Does this mean we give out Demerol for free here? Alot of our pts think so. We do have Demerol in the hospital, so I don't quite get the gist of the sign.

I'm trying to figure that one out, too. I know it's a sign for the seekers, but maybe they'll look at that and think, "Oh, good. They'll give me Vicodin instead!"

My nurse friend's daughter was out of state visiting a college friend and developed acute abd pain and went to the ER. She had a recent history of unusual, longstanding abd discomfort that nobody could find the cause of. Well it ended up being a hot appendix, but not before the ER folks wrote this young lady off as a 'drug seeker' , gossipped about it and my friend caught wind of it on the phone while questioning the doctors. The ER staff didn't get appropriate consults and were just writing her off.

My friend flew out there, saw the abdominal signs, and insisted her kid be transferred to a larger facility with a specialist who quickly dx her and took her to surgery. This first little hospital will pay dearly for this one...my friend is not going to let it go and has an attorney.

What started the problem is when the kid mentioned she has been to the Er before for abd pain, they couldn't find anything wrong, but Demerol doesn't work. (all true per her RN Mom) Well granted 18 yr olds aren't always the most coherent and pleasant when they're in pain, but this facility really dropped the ball and if my friend hadn't flew out to intervene Lord knows what might have transpired...ruptured appendix and peritonitis, the works. :(

I err on the side of the sufferer with pain asessment and try not to judge...people who are hurting don't always behave rationally or within our definitions of proper responses.

My daughter at the ripe age of 15 was labeled drug seeker at our hospital because of chronic migraine headaches we only went there one time and it was awful. Ended up with family services on my doorstep. Now I say I will drive her 300 miles to Chicago to Diamond Headache clinic if our regular doctor (who will call and have them give her a methadone shot) is not in town. She has only had this happen 2 times in 41/2 years she hates to take narcotics because of the way they make her feel..... I hope that as a nurse I will always believe the patient about pain because of how my daughter has been treated. BUT I do understand where you are coming from when you see the same old people c/o back pain or chest pain to get the drugs We just talked about this in pharm class
