I'm confused because in the Kaplan 2010-11 course book it says that meds used are antibiotics, opiods(meperidine avoided because of toxicity), Histamine-blockers, proton pump inhibitors. Also in my med-surg book which is Medical Surgical Nursing by Ignatavicius 6th ed. it says that pain management for acute pancreatitis begins with opioids by PCA. Morphine and hydromorphone (Dilaudid) are used most often because meperidine (Demerol) can cause seizures in older adults. ???????:grn:
So I am not alone with this question.......... Demerol or Morphine.....I am working in a home care, and I asked my nurses, they also told me not Morphine...Hope it is correct....Any suggestions?
it's demerol.. i am using saunders 5th ed and nclex 4000, the drug of choice is demerol. morphine causes spasms and we dont want our patient to suffer more pain since he/she is already suffering from pacreatitis.
