Drug of choice for pancreatitis?

it is demerol. you cannot give morphine to a client with pacreatitis because it will cause spasms.

it's demerol..enough said in saunder.."although it may be prescribe sumtimes,they generally avoided bec. it can cause spasms of the sphinter and lead to increase pain"...thanks.

Morphine is contraindicated with Pancreatitis. :)

Demerol is the drug of choice.

If I'm not mistaken, when it comes to most GI Disorder, Morphine=More Pain.

No Morphine to pancreatitis patient bec it causes spasm to Sphincter of Oddi...Demerol is the drug of choice..

I took Kaplan too when I studied for the NCLEX, which I passed on Feb 22nd. Kaplan's Qbank said that the drug of choice was Demerol.

Morphine was the wrong answer.

I'm confused because in the Kaplan 2010-11 course book it says that meds used are antibiotics, opiods(meperidine avoided because of toxicity), Histamine-blockers, proton pump inhibitors. Also in my med-surg book which is Medical Surgical Nursing by Ignatavicius 6th ed. it says that pain management for acute pancreatitis begins with opioids by PCA. Morphine and hydromorphone (Dilaudid) are used most often because meperidine (Demerol) can cause seizures in older adults. ???????:grn:

So I am not alone with this question.......... Demerol or Morphine.....

I am working in a home care, and I asked my nurses, they also told me not Morphine...Hope it is correct....Any suggestions?

it's demerol.. i am using saunders 5th ed and nclex 4000, the drug of choice is demerol. morphine causes spasms and we dont want our patient to suffer more pain since he/she is already suffering from pacreatitis.
