We had a meeting today at our hospital. One of the physicans brought up concern over Doctors that bring their young children on rounds with them. This doc was asking if we have a policy that addresses this. The doc was concerned in regard to the child's risk of acquiring an infection.I would like to know if there is any hospital that has a policy in place regarding this. Or how this is addressed in other places. I realize the obvious thing here is that the ones bringing their children in should know better, but that's not the case.

Infection concerns should probably be directed toward what the patient might get from the children. And what happened to HIPPA? Did it disappear while I was on vacation?

I would also have an issue of confidentiality, cos we all know what big ears little people have. ( I don't mean to offend anyone)

I would think that the "no visitor under the age of 13" would also apply to the staffs children. Completely unacceptable IMO.

We have a few Docs who bring their little ones with them on rounds, usually on the weekend. Sometimes 3-4 yr olds in the ICU, they'll just leave the kids at the nsg station for us to watch while they make rounds.
No one has ever questioned this or said anything to the Docs.
Some even bring their spouses to hang out at the station while they do rounds.
Oh well, they're bringing money into the hospital!
So in addition to being in caring for ICU patients, you become the babysitter for the doc's kids? Give me a break! How inappropriate it that?
Well, I'm in a hurry, can you tell? Usually I proofread my posts much better than I just did (about ready to get ready for work.) But hopefully you get my drift.

No more inappropriate than someone bringing their kids with them to the ED when they know they will have to have a pelvic exam and bring no one to mind the kids while they are being examined. End up being a baby sitter then too. At least I feel like it's part of patient care. Doc's should leave their kids at home when they round, can you imagine bringing your kids to work with you?

We had a doctor that use to bring his dog with him. He was a great dog and the doc just put his leash around a leg of a chair at the nurses station while he made rounds. The dog was great and he would sometimes bring it to see his long time patients. Actually the dog was no trouble and doctors kids sometimes are. Finally management made him stop bringing the dog.

We have docs that do this. But, we are in no means expected to watch them. They bring coloring books or something along. They sit quietly in the nurse's station while their dad makes rounds. I do not think it is a big deal. They are usually only there for a 1/2 hour at most. Our nursing station is large and they are not in the way.

Well, I totally agree with tntrn. Besides, in most jobs/professions, people do not take their children to work with them. It would be totally unacceptable, and possible grounds for dismissal. Do the doctors not realize that this is their job that they are taking their children to?

Only one of our docs has brought his kid in...he happened to be on call that night and had taken his daughter (4) to dinner or something and he got called in...I think his wife happened to be out of town or somewhere else that night...he was very apologetic...this is absolutely one of our nicest docs and his daughter was very sweet so it was so problem...our CNS even stayed over to color with her...it worked out ok, but I certainely don't think that it should be a habit.
