I am not easily offended and l let things roll off my back. The P.A. was making rounds the other day and walked into one of my patients room. I heard the patient ask, "A nurse came into my room at 3a.m. and put something in my IV. I have no idea what it was." The P.A. came out of the room and asked me what it was. I told him I was not sure, but I would find out and let him know. I followed that up with, I'm sure it was important if it was 3a.m. He smiled and thanked me, and walked back into the patients room. I heard him say, "you know, Nurses are stupid. They think if they are awake at 3 a.m. then you should be too." It was probably a flush to make sure the IV is still working. Anyhow, I'll find out fore sure." My mouth hit the floor. At that very moment, I remembered in report the nurse tell me the pt had a Bigeminy rhythm and he was given IV Mag, which corrected it. I quickly walked into the patients room and explained to the pt and P.A. what was given and why. The P.A. responded with a great big smile on his face, "See, I knew we would find out!" I still get pissed every time I think about it. I am a very quiet, non-confrontational person, but let me tell you....I can spit out a sarcastic comment that will make your head spin when I feel the need. I am feeling the need!
He is not a doctor, as in physician. He is a PA, The ASSISTANT (EXTENDER) of the physician. He is also a rude jacka$$!
I like to keep my cool and not to give a tit for tat sort of behaviour! The best way to deal with such an uncultured PA is to report him to the higher authority , discuss his behaviour and make him understand that he is part of the team caring for the same patient and he has to Polish his wild language before he is shown the door for intimidating people, which may be termed as bullying- zero tolerance!🙄
AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Good one! I spend LARGE chunks of my day fixing med team mistakes. I dare a physician to try to keep up with me on my average morning shift! DARE THEM! In fact they can follow me from 0700-1100 and take the rest of the day off. I won't even try to make them finish the shift!
I remember the last time I asked a doc to help me move a patient in bed and they looked at me like a deer in the headlights. Doc's know a lot, but they can't live without us. Only a fool would think he could get by without a good nurse! Any good leader knows their limitations and recognizes the critical value of aides and advisors. That is why I love my nurse assistants!
Also I would add it is ludacris that he would say something like that. I have never seen a nurse who wasn't happy that their pt is sleeping. NEVER! If we woke them up I promise THE MED TEAM ordered it to be given.
Nah, its just that the job requires a ridiculous level of professionalism and discretion. It is best to not open up at work. I think if my co-worker perceive me as boring I'm doing it right. They don't need to know about my personal life!
PS. This was a reply to a previous post. I am unsure why it appeared out of sequence!
Nurses are not stupid, on the contrary, very clever. However, I think nurses are boring.I've never socialized with nurses. When I make small talk I prefer to chat with physicians because they have something interesting to say. They have knowledge of topics beyond just working at the hospital.
For instance, some physicians travel around the world and share their travel stories with me. Some physicians are photographers in their spare time and they show me the pictures. Other physicians play in a rock band.
Nurses seem to be intellectually disinterested in the world, even if they are terrific nurse clinicians. Booooooring....

We have a physician where I work that is exactly the same way. He thinks nothing of walking into a patients room and telling them, their family, or any other visitors that the nurses are stupid and we don't know what we're doing. He's also the same physician that will march into our managers office and throw a hissy fit because some nurse called him in the middle of the night for orders on one of his patients ... after all, how dare they interrupt his sleep?! He's an important doctor, right?! Our manager usually takes his side too. It's easier to throw her own staff under the bus and agree with this imbecile then to actually grow a back bone and stand up for us.
Here is the problem. This was not a Doctor-it was a PA saying this! If we want to be called by our professional and 'protected' title of nurse, we should never categorize this Topic under the heading of Dr. I noticed others have also responded the same. By the way, I do understand Drs say this, but so do our fellow nurses. How many can you remember saying similar things about the next or previous shift, or those who work in another area. Let's start building each other up, not down.
