Cowgirl nice to see you! I responded. My niece is MR. She is 19 now and has these anger fits and starts cursing and swinging. Very hard to deal with.

I voted that I know at least one person, mainly because I worked for a summer at a camp for profoundly mentally and physically handicapped kids, and my sister is a special ed teacher. I have gotten to know some of the kids she's worked with outside of school.

Have had contact w/ Down's people in the past, and have cared for a few briefly. That's it.

I work in a special needs school where 98% of our students are mentally retarded or have Down's.
I also had a son born severely brain damaged who would have had a diagnosis of profound MR had he lived. He died at 7 weeks of age.

My nephew has Down's and my sister was only 22 when he was born. Genetic studies revealed that the chromosome abnormality is genetic in our family--everyone has been tested and there are other carriers besides my sister. No other Down's in the family except my nephew. Our family was even written up in a medical journal. My nephew helped me learn as a nurse how to treat the Down's adults when they come into the acute care hospital.
