Doom and Gloom (A & P 1)

Published

Hello All,

So let me start by saying I think this forum is great. I'm 29 years old and starting over (with my career). I'm a techie (I.T. guy, cumputer guy, etc) and have been in the I.T. field since 1999, and while the money is decent I never had any job satisfaction. After long talks with my wife and my brother (who is an R.N.) I've decided that nursing is something I can be passionate about and get the satisfaction I'm looking for.

Getting to the purpose of this post... I read so much Doom and Gloom about A & P 1 (which is only the being)that I'm second guessing the career move. Do I really want to put another 2-3 yrs in college? ... Is A&P1 REALLY that hard or is it the usual hype? Btw, my brother said its not easy, but its far from mind boggling. I guess I'm just looking for a glimmer of light in the seemingly endless dark post about how hard A&P, Microbi, blah blah, are.

Please shine some light my way...

Everyone has their own strengths. I've never really done well in science courses, but they've always been interesting to me. I got A's in all my prerequisites. If you're really interested in the material, you'll do fine. Organization helps tremendously, in anything.

I'm in my 2nd semester, which may be the equivalent of the 2nd year (feels like it at least), and I still question whether or not all this hard work is worth it or not. I haven't given up yet, so I'm assuming it is.

If nursing is truly what you want to do, then it doesn't matter how difficult that path to get there is. You'll do just fine. Best of luck to you. :]

Don't let A&P scare you...its a very interesting class..just study, memorize the body parts and work hard..you'll be fine...I maintained an A average in A&P and I'm a master crammer...I dont study until the night before the exam...So it can be done but u have to go into the class with the attitude that u will knock out an A...

Oh man, this is me.

I never ever study, but do just fine. Unlike many of my classmates, I don't stress out about tests. My mentality is that if I don't know it by now from lectures and such I'm not going to get it the night before the exam. It has worked so far.

What I have remembered in all of my classes so far is this: If it were easy, everyone could do it. And if everyone could do it, they wouldn't need me. So, when I do well in hard classes, it's validation for the fact that I am one step closer to my ultimate goal: becoming an RN. Whatever I have to do to get in and help patients, I will, and the science is part of that entry process.

I just started A&P 1 a couple of weeks ago..and while it's a lot of information, it definitely is interesting! I'm a career changer too..I work in legal marketing and I'm going through my pre-reqs now.

I've always been fascinated by the human body..and if you have a good teacher..that always help!

However, I advise against JUST memorizing..bc I don't think that will help when it's time to put all the information together..and having to know HOW things work..not just WHAT those things are..

Good luck!

I travel across the border from Canada into NY state daily for nursing school. My A & P teacher first year, first semester did not allow me to retake a midterm examination after being held at the border. I subsequently failed the course and had to retake the class putting off my entire graduation schedule not to mention the thousands of dollars I was put out to retake it.

I am now in my last semester, last year of my BsN course and couldn't be happier!! The course is difficult. Alot of memorization and recalling but as long as you have the drive to do it, you can do it. It is all a matter of how much you want it! Good Luck!

Mo, thanks for the a and p notes from your website they are GREAT!!!

lol this made me laugh-I understand how you feel! i am currently halfway through A&P I and i love it-my professor is great and reviews for the test with us. Its all about memorization. I have taken Micro and a few chem. classes and loved them too-i think it all comes down to the professor and their teaching style.

Now for me, my Achilles heel is algebra-it is the bane of my existance!

Polka-Dot,

I just started A & P1 and just wanted to drop another thank you for the notes. THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!

I think you will find ap fascinating! I love that we have these tiny universes inside our bodies. Usually the material is not difficult, just alot of information if you are taking more than two other classes! I cannot wait until microbiology!! Good Luck:coollook:
