Don't know what to do

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

I am currently in a accelerated practical nursing program. I've only been in the program a month bit it is really starting to wear me down, especially my A&P class. I study everyday, pay attention in class, take notes and my grades are still below a 75. I've spoken to my instructor and expressed some of the problems that I am having retaining the information, only thing she tells mr is to read the objectives and study harder. At this point I am just frustrated, my confidence is just really low. Everyday I go to school I just become more and more depressed and aggravated!! I really want to be a nurse. I have given up so much just to be in this program. I'm not sure what to do at this point. my school does not offer tutoring and I can't afford to hire a tutor. I don't want to drop out but I'm afraid I will fail out if my grades don't improve, and that is what scares me. this program is really driving me nuts!!

Hey raven, Ive yet to no how you feel, I start mid October and Its going to be extremely hard! The amount of reading, h/w, skills, clinical, etc I hear are overwhelming! But, you really want to be a nurse so do whatever it takes to make that happen! You know studying is key along with some down time. I have found a lot of useful posts on this site with study skills, test taking, references and textbooks. As well as helpful students and nurses. I hope you continue your education and would like to hear your progress! Oh how bout a study buddy or group from your class? Hang in there :)

I am in my 6th week. Our school requires an 80 or above in every class...Just know that you are not the only one in your school that is suffering. Just about everyone is...there will always be that person who can read it once and be done...I suggest you try different things. Try getting a recorder & recording your lectures & then listening to it and reading it at the same time.

Then possibly come across someone either from your personal life or class to go over the reading and ask you questions...if you cannot answer something then mark a star. And then make flash cards to memorize those things. And if there is anything, no matter the difficulty level for extra credit...make sure you do it.

I am going through so much in my personal life right now I wish I could just quit and start over next year but I can't lol I have a child to support. So find your reason not to quit, and then push yourself. SLEEP lol make sure you sleep! And if people in class are distracting you then remember that you are there to be a nurse and that making friends will come with time. This first semester will likely be the hardest so if you can make it now you can do it then.

Thank you for the encouraging words. I'm not feeling as down as I did before. I actually did better than I expected on my most recent A&P exam. I'm going to try different studying techniques, someone recommended buying A&P made easy books, has that worked for you guys? I would like to form a study group but everyone already has their cliques. Students in my group are very gossipy and negative. The students who are performing really well in class are overly cocky, so you can't even ask them for advice they look at you as if your stupid. I swear it feels like highschool. I am going through allot in my personal life as well, but I will not allow any of these obstacles to stop me from achieving my goals. This too shall pass!

try outlining the chapter and answer all the objectives in the chapter...answer all the questions at the end of the chapter...utilize the online website that comes with your book if available...also you might want to try the A&P coloring book...overall, A&P is pure memorization, just stay positve and try different study techniques you might also want to talk to the director of the program since you already spoke with the instructor and did not get a clear answer on how to pass this class, the director might be able to give you study techniques as well...

HTH! and best of luck to you...

Might not be an option, but maybe lessen your course load...just an idea.

Totally agree with MySonIsAdorable!!!! I have been in school for two months and it is VERY hard. There are some ppl in my class who can absorb things just from lecture and pass the test with flying colors..Then there is me who listens to lecture..go home and take my own notes and study and still do bad..recently i have been doing ok but i hope it gets better..the more i study

good luck..you can do it

hey ladies im n a 1 year lpn program and i graduate jan 26 2012, it has been the hardest 8 months of my life, u have to sacrifice everything to make it, i do really well, so ill tell u what i do, i use the study guide that comes with my med surg book and i also use saunder nclex pn review book, its really great and lets u know the type of critical thinking u will need to pass the boards, what helped me a lot was to read all of those small hint boxes in every chapter, and all of the nursing diagnoses and implementation in each chapter, what i suggest is to study everyday and to set a steady pace what i do is if i have a test in one week i plan to read like 10 - 15 pages a day so i wont get overwhelmed and i wont have to cram, never wait til the last minute and also learn test taking strategies, they help me a lot when i dont know because i can narrow a answer down to 2 options and have a 50/50 chance of getting it right, good luck

I don't know what your A&P is like, but what really helped me was making flash cards of the things I needed to memorize. It was incredibly time consuming and I had to study those things every spare moment, but I passed so it was worth it. Also, I love the Saunder's NCLEX-PN and would definately recommend getting it. Anyway, good luck and don't give up. Remember, this is your dream and you can make it come true.

First off, the best of luck to all of you :) ...I was wondering if someone could help me understand my test results for the nln pn entrance test please?

a little more infor...my overall score was 97, not 97%...and I got percentage of answers correct but it really gave me no other information.

Thanks!
