Dont know where to start...need advise for Canada

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to take the CRNE through British Columbia, I already read and understand their requirements and how to apply for registration. I am from the Philippines, I am a Registered Nurse and working in a tertiary hospital as a staff nurse. I think I can manage to apply and eventually take and pass the CRNE. My question is,after passing the CRNE, what will I do to practice my nursing career in Canada? Is it the same as looking for a canadian employer (hospital) to petition me for permanent residency just like in the US? I understand that there would be a temporary registration which will be issued to me to work temporarily as an RN, but how will I use it? I am not familiar with the Canadian Immigration? I need your inputs.

Thank you.

If the nursing board gives you permission you can work on a temp visa whilst waiting to sit CRNE but if you fail the CRNE then you can not work. Alternatively you pass CRNE then apply to hospitals in the province and they will assist you in the process to work in Canada. You will initially receive a temp work permit (TWP) and can then apply for permanent residency a couple months later. Before they will issue you with a work permit you will have to have a medical. Actual process doesn't really take that long approx 4-6 months as a rough guide

Thank you silverdragon. Under what visa will I be using/applying to Canadian Immigration should the Nursing Board will give me temporary work permit after they will approve me to take the CRNE? I'm asking this because I am a foreigner. Can I get a nursing job only with temporary work permit?

The visa is called a Temp work permit (TWP) and you should find all info on the Canadian immigration website. Yes you can get job with a TWP and most hospitals will have awareness on the application and process as you will need a LMO from the hospital

I understand that CRNE will be held only in Canada. From here (Philippines) going to Canada to sit for the exam, under what visa I'll be using? Sorry for my ignorance...

If just going for the exam then you will need a tourist visa. Yes CRNE is only held in Canada 3 times a year Feb, June and Oct

Hi avatar29297_12.gif Silverdragon102,

What happens if an examinee fails the exam? Will he/she be deported or can still work as an LPN or Nursing Aid while waiting for the next exam schedule?

By the way, I'm glad to have found this forum. :-)

The TWP is for a set job so I do not think you can work, to work as PN you would have to pass Canadian PN exam.

LPN requires a license, you cannot work in that role if you do not have a license for it.

Also be aware that one has only three attempts at the CRNE, if you do not pass by the three tries, then the visa is cancelled and one has to leave the country and will be unable to remain there.

If you do not pass the CRNE, you would be working as a nursing assistant only, someone that is unlicensed.

You dont have to worry about that suznne, We know ourselves best and we will try to pass the CRNE right away.

I would also like to inform you that I garduated Cum Laude, My NLE rating is very satisfactory,I already passed the NCLEX-RN CA (not really wanting to work in the U.S. but just wanted to gauge my knowledge since NCLEX is offered here in the Philippines). I also passed IELTS with a band score of 8.

Best of luck to you, I was only answering what you had posted about the nursing asst and LPN roles.
