Hi All:
I was wondering if your program allows you to record the lectures in your nursing classes? At my school all of my prereq/gen ed class prof's allowed me to record the lecture portion of the class. I believe that recording has contributed a good deal to my overall success so far. However, I am not sure if the nursing program allows students to audio record the lectures. I do not know why they wouldn't, but for some reason I am thinking that they don't allow it. If your school doesn't allow recording do you know why? Would anyone know why the other classes would allow it and not the nursing classes? Thanks...:)

As a faculty member, I can tell you how I feel about it.
Some of my classes have been both audio and videorecorded by the school. Students in the class can view them at any time. I have no problems with this as I know that the school will maintain control of the tapes and their use.
However ... I don't have the same safeguards or sense of security when a student records things. That is my voice or image being recorded and I have no control over how it might be edited, broadcast, distorted and put on the internet, etc. With no control over what happens to the recording, I am not comfortable with allowing any and all students to do unlimited taping. I might make some compromises on ocassion, but I do not allow routine taping of my classes with no restrictions.

Our school allowed it, we had to sign a paper stating we had no rights to the recording and couldn't repost it on YouTube, etc.

I recorded all of my classes when I was in nursing school and I never would have done something like put them on Youtube had it been around at the time. The school that I most recently attended though, does not allow recording as a matter of policy. In any instance, you are obligated to get the permission of the individual instructor before you record them, as a matter of courtesy. Most do not care either way.

We were not allowed to record lectures for our prerequisites, however some professors were ok with it. In the nursing program, I was told that we could record but need to sign a disclaimer not to re-post or give copies of the lecture to anyone and that it is only for our own individual purposes.
thank you all for your comments. Our school policy is that there are to be no recording devices without the authorization of the prof first. No instructor has refused me yet. I currently hold a 4.0 and I feel that part of that is due to my study habits. One of the things that I do is go back over my notes while listening to the recorded lecture. This way I am sure that I didn't miss anything. Also, it just reinforces everything that we went over.
My concern is while taking patient care I asked my instructor if I could record the lectures and she responded that she didn't mind, but she wasn't sure if the dean of nursing would mind or not.
I guess that I will just ask and the worst they can do is say "no." However, I truly hope that is not the case.

We are allowed to record and so far it hasn't been a problem. It has never even been discussed like any rules for recording.

In my school, it depended on the instructor. Most of mine allowed it...and if they didn't allow recording, I respected that.

My school does not allow it. They use HIPAA as a reason, even though I've never heard any patient names or identifying information used, I guess it keeps them safe if it "slips."

My school uploads recordings afterwards, but are okay with people recording during lecture.
