Does any one know the answer to this??

Published

I just had my Ped's final and there was a question that I didn't know how to answer. In a nut shell the question was:

A patient understands their disease of sickle cell when on a hot day they choose to drink?

A. Lemonade

B. Iced Tea

C. Diet cola

D. Milkshake

I didn't know where they were going with this, I mean I know ppl with sickle cell have to stay hydrated. But what is the difference btwn lemonade and iced tea? Both are sugared drinks. I chose diet cola. Milkshake sounds like a throw away possibility. What would you chose?

One more point. Just like eating snow it takes energy to melt the snow in your mouth leading to very little hydration. Milkshakes being thicker, frozen drinks may take extra energy to process from the time it hits your mouth than lemonaid that is probably higher in sugar and calories but give you loads of water.

I'm not a nurse yet. And before I read the responses to others on here, I would go with lemonade as it is more hydrating for the patient especially the lemons is really good for the blood. Diet cola, no way. Milkshake, no because it causes too much mucous in the system. The other drinks have too much caffeine which I think might mess with the patients blood, causing his heart to race and affecting his cells.

I think I would have gone with Lemonade. The caffeine drinks are right out - a milkshake on a very hot day seems like a hard way to really hydrate. Lemonade - quick absorption and hydration.

also, milk has a fair amount of salt....

would have gone with the lemonade.

Loving the responses here! After reading your posts I'm starting to go with the lemonade answer. BUT, I will find out from someone, maybe I'll ask my professor. I will get back to you guys!

Judging by the posted responses, the answer has to be "all of the above."

But I know for a fact, it does not matter what the answer is, on a test, I also, would choose the wrong answer! I just seem to always miss those nutrition-type questions.

Any update OP as to which answer your professor was looking for?

I'd like to know, too. :)

Iced tea has caffeine which will dehydrate you.

Sorry for the delay! I'm still waiting for my professor. Thanks for keeping up with it. I'll let you know as soon as possible!

I would have gone with lemonade for two reasons: 1) It would be more hydrating on a HOT day than a milkshake. 2) Most people with sickle cell are African American, correct (at least here in the states, in my experience)? Many African Americans are lactose intolerant. In my opinion, without knowing the ethnicity of the pt, I would assume AA and I would not recommend dairy products.
