Does Ohio have really good nursing schools?

Published

Ok, I have come to my senses and decided to be a nurse. But now I am thinking about the where to go to school. I will be moving to Ohio probably by next year but I need to know that the schools there are good quality. I you know some really good schools let me know so I can research them and decide. THANKS!

I guess it depends on where you plan on moving or if you are just going to go to where the school is. I think all the big cities (Cincy, Columbus, Cleveland) all have a selection of great schools depending on which degree you are looking to get. I live in Columbus and there is a large handful of schools here ranging from LPN to Masters. Something to consider in your search!

I would also suggest checking out the NCLEX pass rates listed on the Ohio BON website. When I was researching schools, I found the ones with good reputations usually had high pass rates as well.

Pumpkin - speaking from personal experience, I really like Columbus. There are very many areas that are neat to live in within the city (Victorian Village, Short North, Clintonville, etc) but I recently moved to a suburb to be closer to work and love it too. It never seems to be a problem to get around, the highways are well connected (in my opinion) and it's never more than a 20 minute drive somewhere (not during rush hour). There's lots to do and many great places to eat. I hope that helps!

Not sure what you mean by "really good" nursing school, but by national standards, CWRU and U. of Cincinnati are some of best in the country both undergraduate and graduate. You need to tell us more about what you think is important.

Right now, new graduates of even these schools face a daunting job hunt this summer.:o

This Buckeye welcomes you to Ohio the Beautiful!

I would love to attend Chamberlain college of nursing because of the non waiting list but I don't find $7100 a trimester very affordable. I already have a bachelors degree from DeVry and I want to be a nurse. Is it possible to get that much financial aid if you already have a bachelors degree? If it is possible please let me know and I will apply. If not then I guess I will play the waiting game and go to Columbus, State. :(

If you already have a bachelors, why don't you try an accelerated program? U of Cincy has one that gets you your MSN in two years. I would assume you could fall out after 1 year with your BSN. It's worth looking into. I moved to FL to attend UFs 1 year accelerated BSN program. I did find that financial aid is slim to none for second bachelors seekers.

I have considered Mt. Carmel's accelerated program but I have a 4 year old son and don't know what I would do about childcare. Childcare runs at least $600 a month and if I can't work I won't be able to swing that much. Unfortunately I can't move anywhere else because we have a house and my husband has a really good job here for now. I am planning on doing all the science and gen ed courses at Columbus State and then I am either considering the Columbus State ADN, Chamberlain BSN or Mt. Carmel's BSN.

It is very unfortunate that if you already have a bachelors, you can't get much financial aid. I made a mistake by getting a degree in computer information systems and not really liking that field once I got a job. Even if I wanted to work in that field they consider you obsolete if you have been out of the workforce for more than 6 weeks. Also, CIS jobs are very slim out there anymore so I doubt I could land a job even if I was current.

I'll figure something out, where there is a will there has to be a way.

If you are willing to move to the Dayton area and wait out the list, Sinclair Community College has an amazing program. I have worked with a lot of the graduates and they really know what they are doing.

Hello Lyela,I'm sorry for any inconvinience. Any information would be helpful. Here are some the questions I have.

how competiive is the program?

what was your overall gpa and gre scores if you don't mind sharing?

what things did you include in your personal atatement?

what questions wre you asked in your interveiw?

How was the progra itself? was it so difficult that some students were dropped along the way?

with the cnl msn, can one apply to crna programs or must one have a bsn?

how many students were in your class?

Did anyone have a low GRE score and still got accepted?

anyone with undergrad GPA of less than 3.1 who got accepted?

Thanks so much for any input
