First of all; it is "insertion" not "incertion". Secondly, I think its hilarious you got hit in the back of the head with a catheter....I could not stop laughing when I read it. I think calling the police is a poor waste of their time. I think you should review your technique till you get it down, and if this really bothered you as bad as you say it did, than YES homecare is probably not for you. It takes a resilient person to work homecare.....one whose not going to crumble at something as mere and hilarious as this. Assault and battery charges is really blowing it out of proportion.
So as a clinical manager, you feel CNAs need to be proficient in placement of indwelling urinary catheters ? Furthermore, you are humored at the thought of a staff member being hit in the head ?
Fortunately, during my seven years in home care, I never worked for a manager with a perspective quite like yours.
I cannot decide whether your post is serious, or some warped attempt at humor. Either way, it is a sad testimony and does no honor to your BSN.

NO, IT IS NOT AN ATEMPT OF WARPED HUMOR! I was never with an agency when I was hit on the head! I am just saying , do we need to know how to do it and perform the care when needed when/if we come in contact with a client with an indwelling cath! You would not think it was so funny if you were in my shoes that day!
Systoly Lighten up. I did not realize 10ACGIRL was a CNA.
I agree, that is something, CNA's should not be expected to do or troubleshoot. But I still think its funny. Its not a warped attempt at humor, it is my humor. Without it most of us wouldn't have survived nursing for as long as we have.
I may also, add it is something I would have addressed with the family in terms of unacceptable behavior towards my clinical staff and threatened to take them off service if they could not control themselves. It is something I would have discouraged my staff from calling the cops. The darn thing is a piece of rubber not a brick. Calling the police, would have been OVERKILL in my book.
10ACGIRL Sorry for your past childhood experiences.

It's never funny when someone is hit. Here is something that happened a couple of years ago in the home of 2 patients with home health services but different agencies. One of them had all Home Health Aid care and a once monthly visit by an RN who was also supposed to be responsible (I thought) for their Foley. Well weeks went by and no nurse came by to change her catheter so I called them. They told me that aides should be responsible for that and that "they go to a training class" to learn how to place a catheter. So there isn't a broad prohibition (at least in every state) against it.
What I would ask is how was your training to do this done? Did you feel you were comfortable doing this? Was the patient a minor or not alert and oriented? If they are not either of those things, and the patient doesn't object, ask the relative to step outside. She did endanger his safety by grabbing the catheter and broke the law by hitting you.
Even if the police scoff at you, I would make a report anyway. You will feel less victimized and the person who hit you will think twice before she does it to the next person. I'm sorry things turned out the way they did and remember that just because you are in their home does not give them the right to abuse you in any way. I've had to stand up for myself more times than I care to count - because I figure I would rather stand in a soup line than accept that as part of my job. Nobody has fired me yet. ((( Hugs to you))).
:mad:i was physically abued by a clients mother bcuz i took too long to do it and she jerked it outta my hand and smaked me on the back of the head and said "just leave, heres you pay & nevr come back". its bcuz of that, that i am too afraid to go into hh. i never want to go into another home that i have to know foley incertion.
omg! did you file a police report for assault and battery? you need to. what she did was just wrong!! if you are a cna, i can see that its ok for you to insert foleys if you were inserviced on the procedure and it was delegated to you by an rn. don't let one bad egg spoil the rest of your career.

I know my stance on issues like this seems extreme, but I do not believe showing leniency will bear any fruit in the long run. What would happen to a CNA who did this to a family member. Loss of job, loss of certificate, loss of livelihood - right? I think we can all agree that the punishment for the CNA would be severe. So why then would we want to reduce the CNA to a being of lesser value by limiting the consequences for the other party to a mere request for cessation of behavior in question ?
