hello lpn/lvn students!!!!! i am graduating from my lpn program this summer!!!:yeah:but everytime someone asks me what i am up to and i say that i am in an lpn program their response 9/10 is "ohh are you going on for your rn?" ughh!! it drives me nuts! i really have enjoyed this! and it just so happens yes in the future i plan on going the rn route as i want to work in the nicu and they only hire rn's here. but really?!?!? why?!?! it is so irritating sometimes! if i never advance on to my rn i will be completely happy!!!!!!! i have wanted to be a nurse since i was a little girl and am 2 months away from reaching the biggest goal i have ever set and it will be the happiest day of my life! aside from my wedding and the birth of our daughter! the lpn program is hard!!! and i feel like we don't get enough credit sometimes!!!!

Don't ever let anyone put you down for deciding to become an lpn first.. Everyone's situations are different, in the paths they decided to take to become a nurse.. I'm in a one year lpn program as well, and it is very hard... the farthest thing from a cakewalk.. I too will be moving on to an rn or bsn program after..Congratulations on almost being done!

I am also graduating with my LPN in July , and I've heard this a million times. I think that people just don't know enough about LPN's and it's their way of making conversation. They don't understand the year of hell we have to go through to get where we are. We are on the clinical floor twice as many hours as the RN students in our area, and nurses on the floor have often said that the RN students aren't as prepared as the LPN students and don't really know what they're doing (which, by the way, is the fault of their instructors, not the students!). I've often heard the RN students say things like, "Oh, they're just LPN students.." We as nurses all need to have a mutual respect for one another.
That being said, don't take it as an insult if people ask you if you plan on moving on. Many people look at becoming a LPN as a stepping-stone to so many other opportunities in nursing.
We have been through a lot!!! Keep your head held high and celebrate all you've accomplished!!!

It is VERY annoying. What annoys me even more is that we do our clinicals at the same hospital as the RN students and the staff nurses do nothing but COMPLAIN about the RN students not doing a darn thing when they are there but yet they LOVE us because we do everything for them.... but yet the RN students think they're so much better than us!

Yeah I hate it too, when I went to get my physical for the lpn program the Np said "why not just be an RN." I was a little shocked she said that but the main thing is your doing something positive in your life. I have learned to take in what applies and throw the rest away. I also have realized that no matter what you do someone somewhere will have a problem with it. Congrats on the accomplishment of becoming a nurse you have earned it!!!!

I start Lpn school in the fall, and when I went to my cousin's graduation last week, I announced to everyone afterwards that I was accepted into nursing school, and I didnt get the reaction from my family that I was looking for. My cousin even said, "you know they fazing lpn's out right? Why not just go for your Rn?"Needless to say, I was alittle irritated
That is super irritating!!! Funny thing, I just finished my first semester of RN school and all those girls are SO CLUELESS and I am so far ahead of them. From what I've seen here, the RN instructors do not teach a damn thing!!! I'm so shocked. I'm PROUD that I have my LPN background to carry me through my RN because I am the student everyone else looks to for the answers. Take THAT, LPN haters!

The head of the Nursing Dept at my School (PHD Nurse) said that a lot of nurses and health care facilities respect fellow nurses with the LPN background. If and when you go to get your RN, you may be favored because of this. Just something to think about. I have gotten some of the same comments, but I just shrug them off. A lot of times other people have no clue what they are talking about anyways, ya know?

I'm going to graduating from lpn school in 3 days and it was a challenging yet rewarding experience. LPN school was hard in more ways than one. Mother, wife, employee, student, maid, doormat etc... I had the SAME issue...anytime someone asks about how school is going...the following question is always that....(Don't stop at LPN!!! Go on to your RN!!! etc...) I feel that when people say that- they probably don't mean to be demeaning or decrease your sense of accomplishment...but it is SO VERY ANNOYING and sometimes offensive. Good luck to you in your studies and career!

You GUYS are awesome I'm a RN student but when I have a question I ask Jess she is an LPN and always knows the answers and the best part is she doesn't just tell me she tells me where to find the answers. I hope you do well I think all LPN's are awesome and deserve more credit!!!

It is definately because they are ignorant to what Lpn's do. Some people say Lpn's are just Cna's promoted, I say some Rn's are just promoted Lpn's. The amount of work that consumes an Lpn on any given day deserves some respect. At my facility, the Lpn's run the show, they are charge nurses, supervisors....etc. While the Rn's are doing the exact same job. Don't get me wrong, I definately want to go back to school, especially for the career outlook, but I just remember ( you cant win for losing with people) if you tell them that you are an Lpn, the shrug, turn their noses up. If you tell them you are an Rn, they shurg, turn their noses up!
