some nursing shifts go from 7 p to 7:30 a ? There was a job opening on my unit recently for this shift, but my shift is 7p to 7a...

You get to leave at 7a? When do you give report? On our floor, 0700-0730 and 1900-1930 is when both day and night shift are present and report is given. I work 1900-0730, and it's technically a 12 hour shift, with 30 minutes being for a meal (ha!).

The 30 extra minutes could be over lap to give report etc.. My shift is 7p to 7a but after giving report, I am not out before 7:30.. Hard to leave at 7 when dayshift doesn't get there til 7a.

My shift that I get paid for is for 12 hours (7p to 7a). Included in that 12 hours is a 30 minute meal and two 15 minute breaks. I didn't start working yet....I start in August. I know I'm never going to be able to leave right at 7 a. I'm just curious why someone is getting paid for an extra half hour. Maybe one nurse per shift works longer to be able to ease the transition between shifts and tie up loose ends? I don't know.

Generally, lunch breaks are not paid time. Most places deduct the time automatically, hence you need to stay until 7:30 in order to get credit for the full 12 hours.

when i worked psych, i worked 7 pm --> 7:30 am. during the extra half hour, while oncoming got report, the

offgoing rns and techs covered the floor and handled whatever came up, answered the phones, etc. getting an

uninterrupted report isn't a luxury, it's a necessity and the extra bodies make that possible.

I'll bet you are working til 0730 as well.....the 15 min breaks are paid for by law. When you work until 0730 it's because you aren't paid for lunch. Some facilities/managers will allow the night shift to leave at 0700 because they really don't get to leave the floor to eat because the cafeteria is closed and there isn't enough coverage.

They aren't getting paid the extra half hour I think maybe you misunderstood and you are working until 0130 as well. Check with your hiring manager.

At my hospital, we actually work 0630-1900 and 1830-0700. We refer to it as 7a-7p and 7p-7a as "shorthand" for day shift/night shift. We overlap for report from 6:30-7:00 and are out the door by 7 on good days. :)
