Does anyone else think Pre-reqs suck??

Nursing Students General Students

I'm still doing pre-reqs this fall. Yesterday was my first day. I'm taking psych 200 which is human development, soc 100, speech 175 which is intercultural communications, Eng 101, and biol 101 which is general human biology. I'm already having problems in english, it really sucks and intercultural communications seems extremely boring, biology is ok (I like science), psych seems a little on the boring side, but maybe it will be ok, and soc seems kind of boring too. Did anyone else have this problem?? Did you like pre-reqs?? I just can't wait to get into nursing (I start in the spring). I've been doing homework all day long and I just can't concentrate because nothing seems interesting. Does it get better??? Please reply!

OOPS sorry Tara, it was meant for Future_RN3385!

do you really find yourself using things you learned from Micro. I don't & I only have 2 semesters left. Maybe because I took it in a 5week cram course! They said we would learn 3 weeks of material in one day! Sorry, my brain can't hold all of that!

I never thought of myself as a nerd, but I have truly enjoyed each class that I had to take! I needed 22 prereq's for my bsn and even the econ class was fun since the people I studied with made it fun for me.

I haven't started my nursing classes yet... 13 days! But, already I have used stuff from most of my prereq's... even micro. I was reading through my pharm stuff and realized that when it talked about how the penicillin worked on cells, I had learned that physiology from micro. I also knew what they were talking about when gram stains were mentioned.

My intercultural class (anthro) made me aware of the differences in people and that we all have value in our differences. Here in the US ( and HI in particular) there are so many different cultures represented and it's good to understand something about them.

I even used my history in real life to better understand what is going on in the of the places in the news... mid east, african continent.

Okay, maybe I am a nerd! ;)

Most of my pre-reqs I liked fairly well, or at the very least, I could see the point of taking them.

The two I absolutely HATED were Government and Ethics....ugh...gives me shivers just thinking about them. I had wretched instructors who lectured on very pointless material. We were then given essay tests where the goal was NOT to show that we understood the subject, but rather to read the instructors' minds and say exactly what they would like us to say..... Ick.

I don't like prereqs. either. It took me a while to finish my geology degree in the 80s, and now I want to get through a two year nursing program as fast as I can. I don't want to do the broke student routine longer than I have to.

The community college where I was going to take anatomy said that even though I already have a science degree that I have to take intro biology. I went back to UNLV where I got my geology degree and convinced the instructor of anatomy to waive the intro bio class and he did. This saves me a semester of biology, even though I know the class will probably be more difficult at the university than at the community college. My other classes are done; phil, math, english. That's where my geology degree finally came in handy.

I have a similar situation in which i plan on doing the same exact thing

Lucky for me I don't have to take many of the general ed courses since I've already got a bachelors degree. I got to skip humanities, english, etc. Only one I really have to take is Communications, since I never had to take that for my BA. Other than that, the only pre-req's I have to take are the A&P series, chemistry (took that spring term), 3 basic allied health classes, microbiology, general pharm and developmental psych. Not too bad. And it keeps me busy while I bide my time on the waiting list to get into the nursing classes! ;)

I also can't wait to get into nursing, but I've enjoyed most of my pre-reqs.. mostly depending on the quality of the professor. :)

It just seems like it's taking forever to complete all of them! UGH! :(

I absolutely agree...pre-reqs suck. But I already have a BA in History & MA in Psychology. At first I was really excited about most of my pre-reqs which were chem, micro, anat/phys, nutrition, ethics. I became less excited when I noticed my classes tended to cut corners. For example, in micro we didn't have a lab, but we had extra lecture time. I never saw a microorganism "live." Nutrition was horrid-- most of the material was already covered in chemistry, physiology & what you can read on your cereal box.

After being completely demoralized, I remembered what I learned in grad school-- that higher education doesn't teach you the facts, it teaches you how to learn. So what, I didn't learn respiratory physiology very well...Now I can read up on it while at the beach waiting for nursing school. :p

I have a BA in American Studies so having to take the 5 science/biology prereqs and developmental psych. Does that suck? No - not at all. At one time I was going to go for an MBA, a degreee originally created for liberal arts majors wanting business pedigree. Then I found out the prereqs requirements -- totally depressing. I can't remember what is was now, but the quantity of classes I had to take before starting a grad level class pretty much squelched my starting the program. Also -- some of them were truly waste of time. For BSN, imho, none of these classes are "mickey mouse" classes, except for Developmental Psych. I'm not a fan of psych -- imho, psychology has more in common with mysticism that science.

It seems though that Nursing schools would do better to incorporate the science/biology/statistics classes into their ciricullum[sp] so that they could be tailored to medical environment/Nurses. For example, seems to me Biochemistry would be more valuable that Chemistry II.

I started Chemisty I at one college this week, I start A/P I in Oct at another tech school, all in an effort to finish them as soon as possible.

Good luck!

I hate my math course:( but I am loving biology and medical terminology!

I know that I have to do extremely well in these courses, so I am giving it 150%! lol I'll be glad when I'm done!
